5/2 What's the best broadband service for under $100/month in Santa
        Clara? Thanks!
\_ single/mult IP? static/dynamic? give us some boundaries, man...
           \_ single static IP.
\_ DirectTV is $50/mo and gives you a static IP. I have been
happy with them in Redwood City and SF. -ausman
           \_ What's the upstream rate?
\_ Don't know if they throttle it. when i ordered, the website
didn't explicitly say (or, at least, i didn't notice).
Haven't installed yet. will let you know. --scotsman
\_ Usually it's the same as the PacBell consumer ADSL service
in the same area. In my case, it's 128Kbps, in Berkeley.
\_ Alternatively, if you really want to spend all $100 per month
you might be able to find even more attactive DSL packages
(from speakeasy for example) with faster upload rates, SDSL options,
           multiple IP addresses, etc.

4/19 After installing Logitech wireless mouse, my friend cannot connect from
his PC to his wireless broadband router via a USB wireless network
device. It said that it cannot obtain IP address from the router. Even
uninstalling the Logitech wireless mouse doesn't help. Do you know how
to fix the wireless LAN problem, so that his PC can obtain IP address
        again?

1/14 I am getting DSL for the first time. The instruction from SBC says
that I have to install stuff from their CD and leave the modem on for
10 days for them to "maximize the speed." I don't really want to
install their custom browser and god-knows-what. Can I just ignore
their instructions and still get the highest speed possible?
\_ do the entire install, then afterward, just use the EnterNet

10/10 I'm thinking of gettin Speakeasy's 1500/768 ADSL $89/month.
Does anybody have experience with them? And latency issues?
\_ I have this and I'm happy. Service and quality are high,
and outages are extremely rare -- I've not had any in more
than a year. My latency is very low and Speakeasy has good
           peering. --aaron

9/5 Home Networking problem. I managed to get a set of 5 real IPs.
(ok, 8... minus broadast, gateway, etc). I want to set up a wireless
network at home, as two of the computer, one wirelessl connected
will be running server. Ideally, I would like to have a sort of
DHCP running so occationally, family member with their labtop can
get a dynamic IP and access to the internet. What kind of functionality

9/1 All the sobig email I get seems to come from a specific IP address:
        <DEAD>adsl-XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX.dsl.sntc01.pacbell.net<DEAD> . Is this reliable?
Would contacting PacBell be of any use?
\_ no. just delete it and any email from evil people this way
in your .procmailrc unless for some reason others really have
to send you a windows screensaver or dll via email:

2/8 I am thinking of getting an ADSL. I have a choice of 5 dynamic
IP, or one single static IP. My issue is as follows: I want
to run my little server from home, but at the same time,
I will be sharing this broadband with two or more computer.
What should I do? Get the Static IP option and buy a router
off shelf? Would that give me the ability to run server?

4/24 Say you and your buddy have broadband and want to setup VPN so that
you can access each other's resource. How do you setup VPN?

1/24 What is the best DSL/cable/etc. service south of campus?
\_ DirecTV is not bad compared to PacBell except that you need to
power-cycle their gateway once a week on the average. It costs the
same, you get a static IP address, and you avoid using the satanic
           PPPoE.
\_ thanks! i would like to avoid the monsters. static IP wahoo!

1/7 If you have DSL at home, do you just need a 10/100Base-T hub to set
up a LAN? Or do you need a router/switcher?
\_ Yes. You need a router and a switch. Most broadband routers
include a built-in switch, so, you might not need to buy a switch
              separately.
\_ What's the price of a switch, a hub, or a router nowadays?

12/16 My DSL ISP is near death, and Covad is offering me continued connect-

and my cable co. can barely manage regular TV, so IDSL is the only
technology available to me and Covad the only company that wants to
bother with it. Problem is, their 12-month contract comes with a $500

12/7 Is it possible to setup an ADSL router to support both DHCP and static
IP addresses at the same time? Essentially what I need is to have two
servers up on the network to be viewable by the outside, while the
rest of the computers use DHCP. I have five IP addresses available to
me, and I'd like to only use them for the servers. I assume that this

9/18 If your area carries both DSL and Cable (broadband), why choose
Cable if the bandwidth decreases as more users use it?

           as a package....
\_ Cost. Cable may be cheaper.
