4/4 Probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway: Are apps written for
win95/98/NT generally compatible with winME? Thanks!
\_ If they are simple apps like Word or Winamp, yes. If they use
device drivers like a video camera app or scanning app, then
           don't count on it.
\_ In theory any newer device will have winme drivers but... Anyway,
there's no reason to use winme. Either use win98 or win2k.

Don't get overhyped on PS3 and Wii. CNET reporter says that in his
informal poll, 3 out of 6 people he knew who got an early Xbox 360
had their hardware eventually fail. The warranty is only 90 days,
although after enough bad press MS is paying for all repairs for
        machines built before 2006.

6/13 What is the cheapest way to get 3 or 4 arguably legal
copies of winXP, preferable with SP2 ? Also, how much
do extra terminal licenses cost? tnx.
\_ OEM licenses are cheaper but you can't move them to a different
machine once you activate it. (OEM licenses are what you get when
you buy a new Dell, etc.)

3/16 I have a disc with 2 primary partitions, 1st partition
is NTFS and contains win2k, 2nd partition is FAT32 and contains
win98. how do i dual boot between the two? what bootloader
would work? to use the native win2k bootloader and have
it work with win98 in the 2nd partition, partition
number 1 needs to be in FAT32. - danh

11/9 I tried using FBSD 4.9 to format a 120GB drive as FAT32. The format
succeeded, but I can't mount the drive-- the error message mentions
the next free block exceeding the max. Win2k refuses to create FAT
partitions > 32GB because Win98 machines have 16 bit utilities that
        might barf in that situation.
The point of the exercise is to have a single large partition that

10/22 My sister's computer has been making weird "clicky" sounds at startup,
and she's also having probs starting applications (win98). She's on
a dialup modem and uses those free AOL discs. The weirdest thing is
that when she checks her email (hotmail) the username "ihatedeva"
keeps popping up in the username field of the form. This is not her
email nor any of her roommates or anyone she knows. Has anyone else

10/10 My laptop hd is having problems. Won't boot. Plugged into USB hd
caddy, and see the two partitions on it from my desktop. (Both
running XP). Both partitions show up as drives from an explorer
window on the desktop, but accessing the second partition gives
errors like "incorrect parameter" or "drive not formatted." Tried

                \_ try double your ram

8/20 I'm trying to setup my debian linux server to accept dial-in PPP
connections from my Linux laptop and a win98 machine that is out of
town. I'm already running mgetty as a fax and text-login server.
What's the best method for making connections easy for both the
windows and (debian) linux boxes? There's CHAP and PAP, and I'm
not sure which (if either) to pursue. Has anybody here done this

8/20 windows 2000 gurus please help. I had a crash recently and now I
can't log into the system. It get stuck in "Loading Personal Settings"
and doing ctrl+alt+del doesn't do anything. Safe mode booting does
work and lets me log in. How do I fix this? Is there a way to
temporarily disable all those daemons that get loaded at startup
so that real boot becomes more like safe boot? Thanks!

3/10 Has any of you win98 users with dial-up experienced this? Clicking
Explorer (folder explorer) will bring up dial-up networking.
\_ this happens usually if you are using a yahoo or google toolbar
and you have a dial-up adapter to dial-on-demand.
\_ I'm not sure about the toolbar bit, but go to the internet
