2/11 In ifconfig, what is broadcast? Is that only for multicast? Is it
always X.Y.Z.255? Also what is NOTRAILERS? It's not on the f manpage.
\_ No, the broadcast address is for .. broadcasts on the same subnet.
You address hosts by a broadcast address when you need to contact
all of them on the same subnet, for example when looking up
MAC address for a host that you need to contact.
\- "trailers" is a link level concept that isnt really ised by
anyone today. both endpoints need to advertise this to use it
and since no one does, you shouldnt advertise it. although in
practice since it is extinct, i dunno if anything will happen
if you leave it on. would have to look at specific implenation.
you can look up "trailer encapsulation" in any of the rfc
databases or ethernet specs.if you dont do -notrailers and it
breaks your arp/mac layer stuff, dont blame me. ok bye --psb
breaks your arp/mac layer stuff, dont blame me (the RFC use
strong words on this point). ok bye --psb
\- BTW, trailers were largely cooked up in Evans Hall --psb
\_ IIRC there are some OS/swtich/router/whatever combos where
trailers will fuck up and slow down your net. Just turn
them off like everyone else and forget about it.
