12/7 I'm looking around the IEEE website and google and can't find the
POSIX specifications for multi-threading. Help, please!
\_ You have to pay IEEE to view the POSIX standards online:
                http://standards.ieee.org/catalog/olis/index.html
If they've been incorporated into the Single Unix Spec (many
parts of POSIX have been), you may be able to find them online
           for free at:
                http://www.opengroup.org/austin
\_ Thanks. I eventually did find a line somewhere that says
the stuff is pay-only and they only do electronic dist. to
paying members which is pretty pricey for what I need.
I'll check out the austin group thing and see if my spec is
                   in there.

8/29 There was once a CSUA web page which runs an SSH client for logging
on to soda. Does that page still exist? Can someone remind me of the
        URL please? Thx.
\_ what do you mean? instruction on how to ssh into soda?
\_ No I think he means the ssh applet, which, iirc, was an applet
that implemented an ssh v1 client. I think this page went away

3/29 A friend wants a PC (no mac). She doesn't want Dell. Is there a
good place that can custom build for you (SSD, large RAM, cheap video
        card--no game)?
\_ As a side note: back in my Cal days more than two decades ago when
having a 387SX made me the only person with floating-point hardware,
           most machines were custom built.

10/24 What's an easy way to see if say column 3 of a file matches a list of
expressions in a file? Basically I want to combine "grep -f <file>"
       to store the patterns and awk's $3 ~ /(AAA|BBB|CCC)/ ... I realize
I can do this with "egrep -f " and use regexp instead of strings, but
was wondering if there was some magic way to do this.
\_ UNIX has no magic. Make a shell script to produce the ask or egrep

3/10 What email program do people in Cal CS use nowadays? In my school days
people used /usr/bin/mail, then RMail in emacs, then VMail in emacs.
After my days people used Elm, Pine, Mutt (I forgot which order). In
my first two jobs we could tell the seniority of fellow engineers based
on which email program they use at work, because everyone used what
they used to use in their school years. In my last two jobs though,

11/12 How does one find out if a system has rootkit installed?

The only other answer I can think of is to reinstall the

Interpretations of the standard resulting from defect reports are held in this 31 repository. Join the Review Group The current work item is Technical Corrigenda number 2. To actively work on the Austin Group documents you need to join the austin-review mailing list. Having completed the initial deliverable, the group is presently working on maintenance activities (which recently included delivery of the 2003 edition of the standard which incorporated TC1). The approach to specification development is "write once, adopt everywhere", with the deliverables being a set of specifications that carry both the IEEE POSIX designation and The Open Group's Technical Standard designation, and at the next paper publishing the ISO/IEC designation. This unique development combines both the industry led efforts and the formal standardization activities into a single initiative, and includes a wide spectrum of participants. Press Releases 34 Read a Press release announcing the agreement between IEEE and The Open Group. How to get Involved 39 Why you should get involved with POSIX? Read a 40 backgrounder on the scope, audience and purpose for this standard. View a set of 41 slides (pdf) or read the 42 long scope for an overview. The group is chaired by 44 Andrew Josey from The Open Group. The Open Group manages the day to day running of the group providing the chair, the editor and email/web facilities. Group Materials Group materials are kept in the 45 document register. Search The Document Register Some of the materials are in PDF format, 46 reader software is available. The group also maintains a set of links to other related 47 standards materials. Committee Draft Development Procedures A set of 48 Committee Maintenance Procedures for the Approved Standard are available for information ( 49 summary diagram). The group has adopted the 50 Aardvark comment format for change requests and defect reports. This allows for collation of change requests in order for production of a change request report to be considered at a review meeting. Joint Working Group Procedures 51 JDOCS Procedures for Operation of the group are available. Current Participants As of August 2003 there are approximately 600 participants ,including those from the following entities (who have requested their company be listed): * AT&T * Bull SA. If you wish to have your company listed please contact the chair with your request. The full list of current participants is available from 52 here. Invitation To Participate Anyone wishing to participate in the Austin Group should contact the chair with their requests. You do not have to attend face-to-face meetings to participate, electronic participation is most welcome. Active participants may also wish to apply for organizational membership of The Open Group. The Open Group is pleased to waiver the fees for those actively supporting this activity. See 54 here for details (please note this is for organizations only). If your organization is already a member or you are an individual contact Andrew Josey directly for assistance. Acknowledgements: Thanks to AC for the html page layout.
