11/12 Okay, I didn't make this up. I've been seeing low level flying jets
(looks like those fighter jets) since this morning. What's going on?
\_ See the thread on NYC plane crash below.
\_ Amazing how you can spot possible military craft but entirely miss
270+ people dying in a crash. All over the news.
\_ I don't see how jets can prevent airplanes that are taking off
           from crashing into dense city.
\_ They can't but they can prevent an airplane from flying from
NYC to DC and blowing up something. There's no one big cure-all
              fix to life.
        \_ There was a medium-sized bomber-type airplane flying around
Berkeley yesterday afternoon. It was flanked by two helicopter
gunships, and the bomber was dragging two refueler-type cables,
one from each wing, with a cone-shaped object at the end

5/16 Can anyone tell me what Greece is hoping for by rejecting austerity?
From here it seems like the austerity is a pretty generous attempt
to keep Greece from imploding entirely. Are they hoping the
Germans will put them on eternal state welfare, or what?
Also, why would an outright default mean they must leave the Euro?

It may have looked like a war, but as it turned out, the military aircraft belong to the California Air National Guard. They were taking part in a "refueling mission" staged for Veterans Day parades in San Jose and San Francisco. Terry Knight of the California National Guard, who identified the aircraft as two HH-60 Pavehawk helicopters being refueled by a Hercules C-130. Some callers asked basic questions that police, many of whom had not been briefed on the overflight, could not answer. Still others told police they were angry that the aircraft were scaring them at a time when the nation faces almost daily terrorist threats. The aircraft took off from Moffett Field in Mountain View and toured the San Jose area, flew over East Bay cities and crossed the bay to San Francisco to make an appearance above the Veterans Day parade on Market Street before returning to the South Bay. The aircraft are part of the 129th Air Rescue Wing, based out of Moffett. The helicopters do search-and-rescue missions worldwide. The maneuvers were intended to be a patriotic show of force for the California National Guard, which has mobilized 4,800 people -- including units that patrol the Bay Area airports and bridges. The overflights were reportedly blamed for causing a three-car accident on the Bay Bridge. A driver apparently lost control of his vehicle when he became distracted by the spectacle, according to KCBS Radio. The Berkeley Police Department received several phone calls from concerned residents. Once it began receiving inquiries, the San Francisco police chief's office contacted the California Highway Patrol, which confirmed the three aircraft as having originated at Moffett Field. Local law enforcement agencies were not the only ones who were left out of the loop. A CHP duty officer said he, too, was unaware of the overflights.
