10/10 How was dynamite better than other explosives before its time? Why
was it such a big invention? Thx.
        \_ it's stable?
\_ Easy to make, cheap, powerful, detonates rather than conflagrates,
safe to handle (i.e., stable.) i.e., yes.
\_ Before, nitroglycerin was the explosive of choice. Nobel used
to make it before TNT. Lost relatives, labs, and manufacturing
facilities due to the explosive's unstable nature. Lots of
mining and transport accidents too. Real ugly stuff.
\_ What was that classic John Wayne film where they are
transporting the nitro in a wagon. It was based on another
                 classic (b&w) euro (french?) film...
\_ The John Wayne movie is probably Rooster Cogburn.
The French movie is probably Le Salaire de la
Peur (The Wages of Fear), which was remade as
                    The Sorcerer. - ok
\_ Wrong on the Duke film.
\_ Are you sure that's not it? See the synopsis at
                          http://users.orac.net.au/~mhumphry/roosterc.html

5/16 Can anyone tell me what Greece is hoping for by rejecting austerity?
From here it seems like the austerity is a pretty generous attempt
to keep Greece from imploding entirely. Are they hoping the
Germans will put them on eternal state welfare, or what?
Also, why would an outright default mean they must leave the Euro?
Is it just that they won't be able to pay basic gvmt services

\_ I'm not sure why, but I guess a Greek collapse could screw

Rooster Cogburn and the Lady Release date:November, 1975, 107 minutes Director: Stuart Miller Cast Includes: John Wayne Katharine Hepburn Anthony Zerbe Richard Jordan John McIntire Paul Koslo Jack Colvin Synopsis: Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) is sent by Judge Parker (John McIntire) to bring in a stolen wagon of nitro and guns, and the outlaws who ambushed a cavalry patrol escorting the wagon. Leading the outlaws is the notorious hawk (Richard Jordan) and his band of cutthroats. Serving as the decoy for the outlaws was Breed (Anthony Zerbe), once Rooster's trusted friend and scout. Hot on the trail, Rooster rides into Fort Ruby to find that the gang has preceded him, killing many peaceful Indians as well as the Reverend Goodnight (Jon Lormer). Survivors are Eula Goodnight (Katharine Hepburn), the Reverend's daughter, and Wolf (Richard Romancito), a young Indian boy. Rooster is forced to take both of them on his hunt for the outlaws. The trio catch up with the outlaws and the wagon the following day. Without the leadership of Hawk and the Breed, who have ridden ahead to survey a bank they plan to rob, the gang members are sitting ducks for the wily Rooster, who defeats them with a clever ruse. During the gun fight, Eula saves Rooster's life with her extraordinary marksmanship. Grudgingly but gratefully, Rooster concedes she's quite a woman, and a warm rapport between the incongruous pair begins to take shape. Hawk, with the remains of his gang, sets out to recapture the explosives and the guns. They surprise Rooster and Eula and capture Wolf, but the boy escapes and all three, with guns blazing, escape in the night. At dawn, they reach a river crossing, load up on a ferrying raft and travel down river. Meanwhile Hawk rides furiously down river and plans an ambush. As the raft speeds through the rapids, Rooster sees the gang lined across a narrow spot. He quickly tosses some of the nitro cases overboard and they float swiftly towards the outlaws. Eula shouts to the outlaws not to shoot because Rooster is wounded. Just at the right moment, Rooster shows himself, shoots the boxes of nitro and the gang is blasted to kingdom come. The trio arrives safely in town, and Rooster is given a permanent position, as marshal by Judge Parker.
