A Message from Chancellor Berdahl Dear Members of the Campus Community: I am writing to inform you that there will be a campus-wide memorial service for the victims of the tragic events of September 11. The service will occur at Memorial Glade at noon on Monday, September 17. This event will be one way for us to come together as a community to support one another and grieve the pain and loss that we feel. I want to convey to you the pride that I feel in how our community has dealt with what has occurred and I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting each other and for being tolerant and calm during these very troubling times. Many members of our community are from nations throughout the world. We must remember at this time of great tension, confusion and anger that all members of our community are equally deserving of support. Tomorrow, Friday, September 14, has been declared a national day of mourning. There is no expectation that campus facilities and services should be closed tomorrow. If circumstances dictate otherwise, I will inform you as quickly as possible. I am asking each member of the campus community to stop what he or she is doing and observe silence while the Campanile bell tolls at noon tomorrow. Since that time marks the close of a class period, I am asking professors to hold their classes until the moment of silence is observed. I am sure that faculty, staff and students will take time as well to reflect with one another on the meaning of these events for our lives. Finally, let me share with you some comments that were written by one of our students on poster board at Sproul Plaza: "Fiat lux--once meant we here would illuminate the darkness of ignorance.
