7/14 I just learned that our tech writer makes $110K a year, is
my company stupid or do tech writers really deserve that much?
\_ who hired it? is it sleeping with a VP?
                          \_ is it h07 4zn ch1x?
\_ is (s)he actually any good?
                               \_ esp. in bed?
\_ is someone feeling a little jealous?
\_ Go and find out how much the sales guys/gals make. The good
can make 2x-4x what mid-level engineers make.
\_ Sales is a little different, its base + commission.
              Usually base is quite low.
\_ Spoken like someone who has been told this but never seen
actual figures. What's "low base" to a sales person is often
\_ at cisco the base was 55K to 65K - cisco alum
"quite high" to an engineer. Salespeople are EXPENSIVE. AND
               they frequently suck ass.
\_ at cisco the base was 55K to 65K. Engineers
                     made about 75K to 100K + bonus (10-80% of
salary depending on grade and performance).
Sales didn't get the same sort of bonus.
                     - cisco alum
\_ Of course, ass suckage is not limited to sales people.
\_ Sun offered a coworker $110K + commission to do technical
sales. I know someone at Cisco who is entry-level (to
tech - he sold other stuff before then) who was offered
$80K + commission + $20K signing bonus. The good salesmen
make over $200K and sometimes $300K. They also have a
                  clear path of advancement. --dim
\_ I overhear people at work "yeah, but when he was signed
on he was here for the commission; they were paying him
some crappy salary like $75k" I sighed.
\_ This seems a little high. At cisco the doc writers used to
make about half of that. - cisco alum
\_ It seems a bit high, but not by much, from what I've seen. --chris
\_ You company is stupid. Good companies do not pay the
people who write the manuals more than the people who
         write the software.

Google Wave No More. The people who worked on it were pretty smart.
They wrote up a super awesome OKR with extremely low bar as a measure
of success, exceeded everyone's expectations by going above those
bars, and got big fat bonuses and promotions as a result of their
        planning. Brilliant.

9/20 I am running NAT on an Extreme Networks switch connected to a
Cisco switch at GigE speeds. Copying a file across the same link
w/o using NAT gets about 25 MB/sec, but with NAT turned on I get
2.5 MB/sec. The CPU is 98% idle and there is plenty of RAM. I know
that NAT in s/w has an overhead but could it realistically be a
        factor of 10 slower?

3/13 I have an actual technical question for the motd. Where can I find
the generic Cisco-style symbols for Visio 2003? For some reason,
M$ pulled them from the recent edition and replaced them with
their own crappy non-standard ones. I don't mean the icons at:
        http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/prod_visio_icon_list.html
I mean the generic circle with four arrows for a router, etc. -ausman

12/20 Why the hell does Cisco "The Human Network" advertise on the
History Channel, and why the hell are they so annoying?
"... not just network, HUMAN NETWORK!" Dumb shit.

11/13 If I have a application on machine foo sending data really fast to
an application on machine bar via TCP, and the bar applications job
is write that to disk as fast as possible, what happens if the
network stream is faster than the disk writes?
\_ Look up the differences between TCP/IP flow control and
congestion control. The answer is in front of you.

10/1 Where's the short Google at 100 guy?
\_ Me thinks it's a great time to short now.
\_ Yeah, definitely short it now! Funny thing about stock
valuation: it can sometimes be rational and sometimes
be irrational. If everyone hates a stock, and everyone
shorts it except for a few, and no one who actually owns

10/3 Alright you idiots. I challenge you to list other Google products
that actually make money besides search and ads. Gmail? No. Maps?
        No. Earth? No. WHAT ELSE?
\_ Something near 99% of google's revenue comes from search+ads. There
is nothing else. They've been throwing money at random stuff since
they IPO'd but still have nothing. Maybe they can buy Skype....
