4/9 Has anyone taken the exam to satisfy the E 190 (technical
writing) requirement? What sorts of things were on the exam?
\_ It's not actually an exam -- you have to go to one of the profs
and present a tech writing sample as well as a paragraph describing
your experience in both written and oral technical communication
(separate paragraphs for written and for oral). Then you talk to
them and try to convince them you're good enough. The general
tendency in RECENT past has been to NOT let people pass out.
However, I'm aware of 2 recent cases where people _were_ allowed
to pass out. Email me and I can try to get you in touch with one
of them (I presume they don't appreciate their emails posted on
the motd). Oh, and you can get the "official" instructions on how
to do this from 308 McLaughlin; just ask your SAO. -alexf

2/8 Why does UC suck so hard? I did undergrad at UCB and I hated it.
Professors couldn't teach, class workload was high, and the system
was designed to "weed out" students and demoralize them rather
than teach and encourage them. I always got lower grades than I
deserved for the amount of work I put in. I don't know if this was
because of the curve which insists that 50% of students should get

3/3 Has the CSUA considered asking alumni to ccme back and give talks about
the cool stuff they are doing? I'm thinking of bz (Cyan), maybe aubie
(Pixar)... I'm sure there are plenty of others I'm forgetting (no
offense intended). Twohey, lea, myself and others could talk about
grad school. Brg could too, but I don't know if you would want that.
I bet mconst could put on some kind of freaky variety show (he'll

2/13 Soda undergraduates, I am too old to remember this, is English
        1A/1B a requirement for CS in L&S?
\_ I thought it was a requirement for every department in L&S.
Relatively easy to test out of, though.
\_ Yes, as the pp indicated, it is an L&S requirement, not a
major/departmental requirement. A 4 on the AP English exam tests
