8/21 So I was looking for a good distributed computing project to join.
SETI@Home looks like a waste of effort (just my opinion)
Folding@Home is poorly set up for multiproc systems.
Can someone suggest a project that is worthwhile, has a multithreaded
computation, doesn't use boatloads of RAM, and preferably has a
        halfway decent screensaver?

12/6 I'm at my wit's end with a problem. I'm running WinXP and a lot of
newer 3D games make the machine randomly lock hard. There isn't much
pattern to it, but some games do it and some don't. This problem is
not mentioned under tech support for the games besides the generic
"Update your drivers and DirectX" which I've done. Games which crash
include Railroad Tycoon 3, Rome:Total War and Sid Meier's Pirates, and

6/28 What's a better 3D WW2 shooter game, Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty,
        or something else?
\_ Medal of Honor. Very cool, very difficult D-Day Landing. Well,
then it kinda gets repetitive, but there you go. BF1942 is best
played multiplayer with lots of people, preferably not twinks.
\_ Seconded. I really enjoy 1942 (loads of variety, not too

9/14 What's the best graphics card in terms of bang/buck?
        \_ Currently, anything ATI.
\_ Given the latest Half-Life 2 benchmarks, the Radeon 9600 Pro
\_ Yes, but would you want to play HL2 on it? And is HL2 the
only game you'll be playing? And, oh yeah, HL2 isn't out now
anyway, so today's bang/buck is meaningless in terms of vapor

7/16 Looking for a lite notebook that is reasonbly powerful as well.
Really like the company IBM X-series. But X-series only uses
Pentium 3 processor. Is there any other notebook that is similiar
in size (e.g. 13" LCD) but use a CPU which is more powerful than
Intel P3? I don't mind CPU being slower than Intel P4, but I
want a notch above P3. What kind of Transmeta / AMD / VIA CPU

7/14 We have a lot of games that kill Nazis and Japs (Medal of Honor,
MS Combat Flight Simulator, etc etc etc). Just out of curiousity,
do the Germans/Japanese make games that kill the Allies?
\_ while there is plenty of nazi paraphenalia in Japan, I have never
seen a game where you actually fight the US. There are plenty
where you try to take over Asia though! Also I believe the

\_ Yes, but that's better than "in final regression testing, will
              be released very soon now".
\_ i have bad apprehensions about moo3. its graphics are rather assy.

11/7 So on Apple's web site it says:
"The NVIDIA GForce2 MX and GForce4 MX graphics processors deliver
        unparalleled 3D graphics."
Aren't there any truth in advertising laws about this?
        Unparalleled my flaming ass.

10/18 I'm looking to buy some new hardware to run Linux on: AMD Athlon,
AGP graphics for X. Any suggestions for the motherboard, chipset
and graphics card. I don't really need 3d but wouldn't mind having it,
if it doesn't degrade 2d performance.

2/22 Go watch the streaming video presentation of GeForce3 / Doom3. You'll
be impressed (oh wait, this is the CSUA i'm talking to here... n/m)
\_ For only $600 too. Why bother paying rent when you can get a

\_ I'm still waiting for nVida to release the mac rom flasher
