1/16 Since some fucknut deleted it, I'll ask again: Can someone point
me at course/tutorial/lecture materials about OS and kernel
architecture? No matter how practical or theoretical. I'm looking
for tips for a friend who's interested in (mainly Unix) design
theory, but also general OS stuff. -John

7/24 Firefox 3.5.1 on MacOS is a piece of crap. It crashes ALL THE TIME.
It has crashed 3 or 4 times on me in the last hour, and not on
the same pages either. The new Yahoo! home page also sucks ass.
\_ os x keeps trashing my raid disk: '11 hours to rebuild. have fun
with the kernel IO subsystem running like shit until then".
           Worthless piece of shit.

7/20 For those who care btw, it looks like eclipse is now A Standard Tool
at UCB ugrad cs, probably replaced emacs. Furthermore, people get
angry at seeing Makefiles, (since eclispe takes care of that). I
guess it's just a sign of the times.
\_ The more people at my work use eclipse the less the code is
managable in emacs. I'm not sure which application's fault

11/15 So if I have a process running in Linux and kill -9 isn't
killing it, and killing its parent process didn't kill it,
and now it's reading as though its parent process is 1,
is there any way to kill it short of rebooting the machine?
\_ Sure, but you dont want to be mucking around in kernel data
strucures. Most practical way is to reboot the machine.

8/2 I'm in charge of setting up the software infrastructure at a
small company and would like advice/pointers on which LINUX
distro is best for small, internally used compute/database servers.
I want something which is stable, easy to maintain/upgrade, and has
commercial support available for purchase. I've been happy with
        Debian's ease of maintenance/upgrade/install via apt/synaptic, but

3/24 Wow! FreeBSD sure is stable! After seeing soda's amazing uptime
record, I sure want to go replace my Linux boxes with FreeBSD!
Please do not delete this, or burn down Linus' house because I have
blasphemed the holy FreeBSD. I'd love to see a genuine discussion with
examples from both sides comparing the stability of *modern* FreeBSD
and Linux machines running on x86 hardware. -dans

1/10 VMWare GSX is most similar to VMWare Workstation. GSX allows the
console to be viewed remotely. GSX does require IIS to be installed
to handle the web component on Windows, or apache on *nix. ESX is an
OS unto itself... it runs on a modified Linux kernel, and all virtual
machines use a different file format than Workstation / GSX. Also,
installation and administration of VMs is always done via web browser

6/6 Does anyone use FreeBSD on laptop for daily use? I'm thinking
        about replacing my iBook w/ a ToughBook or a ThinkPad b/c I
need to occasionally dual book Windows and I want to get an
idea of how well FreeBSD works on laptops before I do this.
I'm open to Linux but based on my experiences at work, I just
don't think I can get along w/ it for personal use on a daily

1/28 Who here works at VMWare? I have a suggestion for you so that maybe
you can talk to a marketing dude or something. I think VMWare is one
of the coolest products out there. How about this for marketing.
Give free copies to academia, they really need it for say, OS projects
and what not. Also, give lots of academic discount to students
since many of them are Linux/Win dual boot users, and since quite a

1/5 So who else thinks that Linux Kernel Development has gone haywire?
WTF is up with this movement from an 8k to a 4k stack in the kernel
that breaks tons of existing drivers that are ported over from
Windows? And wtf is this crap doing on production distros like
Fedora? Don't they realize that if you're going to have a large
install base that you can't arbitrarily do crap like that anymore?

12/19 How do you override the hardware MAC addr in OS X? I tried the usual
ifconfig en0 laddr anotherAddr but besides disabling the interface
it seems to do nothing. It no longer receives DHCP message from
the cable modem. (Another machine which has anotherAddr as its real
MAC works just fine so it's not the fault of the isp.)[restored]

12/02 I have only used Mac laptop (powerbook). However, I am not making
lots of money these days and mac laptops are just too expensive.
To those who have used both Mac and PC laptop, are there cheaper,
faster PC laptops that are no less reliable than the powerbooks?
Are there going to be features that I will miss if I switch, like
        target disk mode, etc?
