12/6 How long does it take to setup DSL with PacBel and other providers?
Let's say I order it tomorrow. How long will it take?
\_ Don't order via PacBell, they are terrible. You need to use
PPPoE and DHCP. Go with a real ISP that gives you a static
              IP.
\_ Wait, y'mean they no longer give out static IPs? That kinda
makes me wanna stay at my current residence and never move
cuz I do have static IP from PacBell.
\_ you can pay more for static IP
        \_ 2 months minimum.
        \_ 1 month from http://speakeasy.net - chiapet
\_ They are a tad expensive. Are they really very good?
\_ doesn't PacBell have some do-it-yourself installation kit now or
           something?
\_ it doesn't work unless you are really really lucky. Earthlink
              has the same BS.

4/19 After installing Logitech wireless mouse, my friend cannot connect from
his PC to his wireless broadband router via a USB wireless network
device. It said that it cannot obtain IP address from the router. Even
uninstalling the Logitech wireless mouse doesn't help. Do you know how
to fix the wireless LAN problem, so that his PC can obtain IP address
        again?

2/18 My DSL modem's ip address is 192.168.0.1, my internal network
behind my router is 10.0.0.x. Is there a way I can configure
the router so I can access the DSL modem from my 10.0.0.x
network directly without re-wiring? Static routes? I tried it
but no much luck. I also tried changing my internal network to
192.168.0.x, but still does not work. Thanks.

8/29 What's the difference between a hub, a switch and a router? Thx.
\_ AFAIK, probably be corrected by someone:
hub: Allows communication on a LAN with bandwith shared amongs all
the nodes on the hub and maxing out at the max line speed.
switch: Allows communication on a LAN with bandwith greater than
the max line speed (point to point)

1/14 I am getting DSL for the first time. The instruction from SBC says
that I have to install stuff from their CD and leave the modem on for
10 days for them to "maximize the speed." I don't really want to
install their custom browser and god-knows-what. Can I just ignore
their instructions and still get the highest speed possible?
\_ do the entire install, then afterward, just use the EnterNet

9/5 Home Networking problem. I managed to get a set of 5 real IPs.
(ok, 8... minus broadast, gateway, etc). I want to set up a wireless
network at home, as two of the computer, one wirelessl connected
will be running server. Ideally, I would like to have a sort of
DHCP running so occationally, family member with their labtop can
get a dynamic IP and access to the internet. What kind of functionality

2/8 I am thinking of getting an ADSL. I have a choice of 5 dynamic
IP, or one single static IP. My issue is as follows: I want
to run my little server from home, but at the same time,
I will be sharing this broadband with two or more computer.
What should I do? Get the Static IP option and buy a router
off shelf? Would that give me the ability to run server?

10/16 I'm using a cable modem for net access on a computer running
RH 7.1 linux. The cable company hands out dynamic IPs via
dhcp, but I want my IP to stay constant so I can run a webserver.
How do I force my computer to update its dhcp lease? I tried
        using /sbin/dhcpcd -n, but that didn't change my dhcpcd-eth0.info
        file. Thanks.

9/12 Secondary theme on DSL - I have pacbell and I'm suffering many
dropouts because I can't authenticate on PPPoe. Sometimes their
server is overloaded, sometimes reseting my routers fix it. So...
pay them $15 extra for *5* static IPs, or find another PB reseller
who gives you 1 static, risk a new set of problems? -jor

5/2 What's the best broadband service for under $100/month in Santa
        Clara? Thanks!
\_ single/mult IP? static/dynamic? give us some boundaries, man...
           \_ single static IP.
\_ DirectTV is $50/mo and gives you a static IP. I have been
happy with them in Redwood City and SF. -ausman

4/24 Say you and your buddy have broadband and want to setup VPN so that

1/24 What is the best DSL/cable/etc. service south of campus?
\_ DirecTV is not bad compared to PacBell except that you need to
power-cycle their gateway once a week on the average. It costs the
same, you get a static IP address, and you avoid using the satanic
           PPPoE.
\_ thanks! i would like to avoid the monsters. static IP wahoo!

1/7 If you have DSL at home, do you just need a 10/100Base-T hub to set
up a LAN? Or do you need a router/switcher?
\_ Yes. You need a router and a switch. Most broadband routers
include a built-in switch, so, you might not need to buy a switch
              separately.
\_ What's the price of a switch, a hub, or a router nowadays?
