9/8 Monopolies suck! Due to an administrative glitch, PacBell has
royally screwed up my companies DSL service to the point where we
have to put in a new order and wait 4 weeks(!) for service. And
switching providers wouldn't help since this is a problem at
their central office and all providers run on PacBell wires anyway,
right? Anyone know of anything we can do about this?
\_ DSL is for cheapasses. Get Wireless T1.
\_ provider? I haven't heard of anything wireless going over like
              400Kbps.
\_ Check out this page, some of them do upto 1.5 MB

                 http://www.cmc.com/lars/engineer/wireless/w-isp-list.htm

A friend of mine runs his company's main link using a
1.5 wireless T1 link. It rocks. I would get it but I have
                 good DSL service through firstworld.

                 You are right PacBell SUX!!!!!
                 \_ soda> nslookup http://www.cmc.com
                    *** localhost can't find http://www.cmc.com Non-existent host/domain
                 \_ thanks!

3/29 A friend wants a PC (no mac). She doesn't want Dell. Is there a
good place that can custom build for you (SSD, large RAM, cheap video
        card--no game)?
\_ As a side note: back in my Cal days more than two decades ago when
having a 387SX made me the only person with floating-point hardware,
           most machines were custom built.

9/13 Thanks to Jordan, our disk server is no longer virtualized. Our long
nightmare of poor IO performance should hopefully be over. Prepare for
another long nightmare of poor hardware reliability!

        Just kidding! (I hope)
In any case, this means that cooler was taken out back and shot, and

5/4 Any thoughts about apple switching to ARM for all machines?
\_ Could only have happened if the Mac App Store had been a wild, wild
success, and they were willing to give up Steam. Games/dual-booting
is strategically valuable to not driving people away from macs.
A new ARM iOS based device, or opening the Apple TV to iOS apps
(same thing, really) would be much more likely than sabotaging their

9/25 What's a nslookup equivalent to look up "set type=all"? I don't
        have nslookup anymore.
\_ I think nslookup is deprecated and you're supposed to be using
dig and host now. Do you want the equiv 'host' acommand?
\_ is it host -av <host>?

7/20 For those who care btw, it looks like eclipse is now A Standard Tool
at UCB ugrad cs, probably replaced emacs. Furthermore, people get
angry at seeing Makefiles, (since eclispe takes care of that). I
guess it's just a sign of the times.
\_ The more people at my work use eclipse the less the code is
managable in emacs. I'm not sure which application's fault

5/6 My new Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP finally arrived. While it's only
1/2 the cost of an Apple LED Cinema Display 24, it has very rich
colors and is super bright. However, it is HUGE. It's about 5 inches
thick and looks uber ugly on my little desk. Functionally, it
does what it does well, and the specifications are superb. But
it's like a PC-- full of features (CF card, SD card, 4 USB, VGA,

4/25 I have an Airport Express. is there some way to let computer
1 ping computer 2? both computers are connected to wireless network
successfully. I can get to internet on both of them. I just can't
ping each other. weird. maybe they think that's a feature?
\_ Sounds like your router is enforcing client isolation. If you can't
change the setting on the router you're probably SOL.
