8/2 anyone know of DSL w/ static ip in fremont?
\_ firstworld still gives out static IP. You may need
to ask them for it, but there is no extra charge.
            \_ still $90 is steep
\_ Its $69 for 600/384 in the south bay.

4/19 After installing Logitech wireless mouse, my friend cannot connect from
his PC to his wireless broadband router via a USB wireless network
device. It said that it cannot obtain IP address from the router. Even
uninstalling the Logitech wireless mouse doesn't help. Do you know how
to fix the wireless LAN problem, so that his PC can obtain IP address
        again?

1/14 I am getting DSL for the first time. The instruction from SBC says
that I have to install stuff from their CD and leave the modem on for
10 days for them to "maximize the speed." I don't really want to
install their custom browser and god-knows-what. Can I just ignore
their instructions and still get the highest speed possible?
\_ do the entire install, then afterward, just use the EnterNet

2/8 I am thinking of getting an ADSL. I have a choice of 5 dynamic
IP, or one single static IP. My issue is as follows: I want
to run my little server from home, but at the same time,
I will be sharing this broadband with two or more computer.
What should I do? Get the Static IP option and buy a router
off shelf? Would that give me the ability to run server?

5/2 What's the best broadband service for under $100/month in Santa
        Clara? Thanks!
\_ single/mult IP? static/dynamic? give us some boundaries, man...
           \_ single static IP.
\_ DirectTV is $50/mo and gives you a static IP. I have been
happy with them in Redwood City and SF. -ausman

4/24 Say you and your buddy have broadband and want to setup VPN so that
you can access each other's resource. How do you setup VPN?
                                        -VPN clueless
\_ http://www.cisco.com has some good introductory docs on how VPNs work.

1/7 If you have DSL at home, do you just need a 10/100Base-T hub to set
up a LAN? Or do you need a router/switcher?
\_ Yes. You need a router and a switch. Most broadband routers
include a built-in switch, so, you might not need to buy a switch
              separately.
\_ What's the price of a switch, a hub, or a router nowadays?

12/16 My DSL ISP is near death, and Covad is offering me continued connect-
tivity through their "Safety Net" program (otherwise known as the "We
Already Know You're Desperate, So ..." program). I live in the boonies
and my cable co. can barely manage regular TV, so IDSL is the only
technology available to me and Covad the only company that wants to
bother with it. Problem is, their 12-month contract comes with a $500

9/18 If your area carries both DSL and Cable (broadband), why choose
Cable if the bandwidth decreases as more users use it?
\_ i don't know..maybe they offer sweet cable (for your tv) deal
           as a package....
\_ Cost. Cable may be cheaper.
\_ $10/mo less, free install, 3 free months
