A Professional X Server for Windows MicroImages maintains MI/X as the X Server for its line of 29 TNT products, so you will find MI/X a stable and robust performer. With MI/X you can: * Use your PCs as X terminals in a network environment -- MI/X works fine as an X terminal emulator. MI/X works fine there, too -- after all, that's why MicroImages developed MI/X in the first place. Sorry, 38 no upgrades for single unit licenses purchased before 1 January 2003. In Windows Desktop mode each X client window will appear as a separate window intermixed with any Microsoft windows which are also open. All MS Windows icons, taskbar, and other desktop features are still available on this rootless desktop. In X Desktop mode a large X window is opened at the size you specify which can be smaller, equal to, or much larger than the resolution supported by your display board (see below for virtual X Desktop operation). All your X client windows will then appear on this X Desktop. Since MI/X is simply another Microsoft Windows application, If you want to access your Windows desktop you can iconify this large X window or use any of the other methods provided by Windows. All the X client windows you open can then be positioned anywhere on this virtual desktop. Your monitors view area can be repositioned instantly to any position on this virtual desktop using scroll bars or the small auxiliary Workspace Overview window which automatically appears when you set up a virtual X Desktop. The illustrations below show how MicroImages uses this virtual X Desktop or workspace to view images and other map data much larger than the monitor and how the Workspace Overview window provides a synoptic view of the X client windows on this desktop and the interactive tools to move your real view over them. It also provides a means to calibrate the scale of the real view, set the background color of the desktop, toggle on and off the Overview window, the title bar, and so on. TrueType fonts are presented to the X client as iso10646-1 (Unicode), which means that X clients get access to the full range of glyphs in the fonts. This is illustrated by some of MicroImages use of TrueType fonts in connection with our other TNT professional products. If your MS Windows is running spanning several monitors then MI/X will also span across them as illustrated below with results from other MicroImages TNT professional products.

Computer labs: Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities The Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities (W&MF) provide general access and instructional computer labs with both Macintosh and Windows-based computers for the campus community. Check the W&MF web site for information on locations, hours, available software, walk-in classes, class reservations, and other supported services. Computer support for departments: Departmental On-site Computing Support (DOCS) The Departmental On-site Computing Support (DOCS) group provides computing support to campus departments at the customer's site for a fee. This service is intended for those departments that do not have their own local support staff or do not have enough computers to warrant hiring a full-time support person. Computer repair/hourly support: Campus Computer Repair and Support Campus Computer Repair and Support, a unit of the Scholar's Workstation, provides a complete range of support services for operating systems, applications and connectivity including Ethernet and dialup for Macs and PCs and performs contract-based support services on an hourly basis. Faculty and Staff Consulting Connecting@Berkeley Faculty and Staff Consulting (formerly Dr. Micro) provides assistance with getting connected to the Internet via the campus network and general software support for the Connecting@Berkeley CD. Computer Training: CAL PACT CAL PACT offers free computer training to all UCB staff employees. Courses are two to three hours, and involve hands-on training with one computer per participant. Detailed handouts are provided with each class so exploration and learning continue back on the job. Classes are small, with no more than 18 participants, and are team taught by two instructors, allowing time to have questions answered. Computer store: The Scholar's Workstation The Scholar's Workstation (TSW) offers a large variety of computers, peripherals, and software for sale to individuals at academic prices to the campus community. You can find most of the popular commercial software products here. You can also find recommended configurations for Macintosh and Windows computers on the TSW site. Software Distribution Software Distribution sells software covered under campus or UC-wide licenses, deals or contracts. This software is available to campus faculty and staff for academic, educational or organizational use. Much of its software is specialized academic software, such as statistical packages or mathematics applications. Back to top About WSS Mission Statement Workstation Support Services (WSS) supports Berkeley campus departments and the faculty, staff and students in making effective use of information technology in a distributed computing environment. WSS provides support services at the local level for academic, research and administrative users of microcomputer technology and networking. It is the only campuswide organization serving campus computer users from all departments. WSS provides those products and services which are most effectively centralized and promotes the successful, independent use of workstations and workstation networks. WSS assists in setting campus standards for workstation hardware, software and networking and promotes adherence to standards through coordinated service offerings.
