3/2 "He was plotting it for around two weeks, jokingly, saying he was
going to extort money from these companies. Then all of a sudden
he got dared to do it, and 10 minutes later Yahoo! was down. He
never made extortion demands," the source said. We should all be
thankful he got scared and didn't carry out his next idea, and
that no one else feels the need to do this either," the source
wrote. "He had a DDoS (distributed denial of service) tool that he
wrote installed on all of his hacked boxes. He was planning on
using all 1,000 machines in a combined attack on the Root
Nameservers, flooding the Nameservice ports with UDP packets." "He
is safe and he knows it, he deleted all evidence off his machine.
...He is very well aware that there isn't any way to prove a smurf
        attack after the fact." http://www.msnbc.com

9/20 How do I change my shell? chsh says "Cannot change ID to root."
\_ /usr/bin/chsh does not have the SUID permission set. Without
being set, it does not successfully change a user's shell.

5/8 Hello everyone! This is Josh Hawn, CSUA Tech VP for Spring 2012.
About 2 weeks ago, someone brought to my attention that our script
        to periodically merge /etc/motd.public into /etc/motd wasn't
running. When I looked into it, the cron daemon was running, but
there hadn't been any root activity in the log since April 7th. I
looked into it for a while, but got lost in other things I was

2/9 Reminder: support for mail services has been deprecated for *several
years*. Mail forwarding, specifically .forward mail forwarding, is
officially supported and was never deprecated.
\_ There is no .forward under ~root. How do we mail root and how do
           we get responses?
\_ root@csua.berkeley.edu is and always has been an alias.

9/12 We've restored CSUA NFS to something vaguely resembling normal
functionality -- plus, with some luck, we should now have something
vaguely resembling normal uptime, too! Ping root@csua.org if you
        notice any problems. --jordan

6/5 In an effort to stabilize our services, we'll be rebuilding parts of
the CSUA infrastructure over the course of this summer. To give us
some wiggle room, I've temporarily decreased soda's allocated RAM from
8GB to 2GB. If you need to run something that requires large amounts
of memory, please send mail to root@csua.org and we'll try to
        accommodate your request. --jordan

        \_ What's wall?
\_ An anachronism from a bygone era, when computers were hard to
comeby, the dorms didn't have net, there was no airbears, and
when phones didn't come standard with twitter or sms.
\_ A non useful implementation of twitter.

FEC WILL LET 'SOFT MONEY' FLOW Federal regulators on Thursday refused to impose new restrictions on political groups that are spending millions on the presidential election, and Republicans predicted the decision would open the spending floodgates on their side. RATE HIKE AGENDA DEPENDS ON CPI DATA New data that show wholesale prices posted their largest increase in a year last month have reinforced the view that the Federal Reserve will begin to raise interest rates at its next policy meeting in late June. But the key to telling whether the Fed will be forced to raise rates at a faster-than-expected pace will be April consumer price report, economists say. NIGHTLY: US DECISIONS LED TO IRAQ OCCUPATION MISSTEPS How did a lightning-quick invasion turn into what some fear is becoming a nightmare occupation? Critics point to key mistakes, despite plenty of warning. MP IN SCANDAL OFFERS TO PLEAD GUILTY One of the military police officers charged in the abuse scandal at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison has offered to plead guilty and has provided military investigators with a detailed account of how guards humiliated and beat detainees, in one case hitting a prisoner so hard he became unconscious.
