1/26 Can somebody with a copy of DeCSS -- the DVD cracking program put up
a copy on soda? Or a pointer to it? Thanks.
\_ Trying to get soda confiscated as evidence? No thanks.
        \_ http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~seidl has a copy on it.
\_ thank you so much matt!
\_ Criminals. I can't believe anyone in the CSUA or alums would
promote this sort of theft. It's no different than all the wAReZ!1
kids stealing on the net swapping software they never purchased.
\_ I'll just call this a troll now. Note that CSS does NOTHING to
prevent bootlegging of DVDs since you can just do a bit by bit copy.
        \_ http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,33922,00.html
Just grab a copy of the source code and build your own decoder.

11/20 Are there tools that can justify a chunk of plain ASCII text by
replacing words with words of similar meaning and inserting/removing
commas into the text? I received a 40-line plain text mail where
all the lines are justified on left and right. Every word and comma
is followed by only one space, and every period is followed by two

I can do this with "egrep -f " and use regexp instead of strings, but

The 48 DVD Copy Control Association included its "trade secret" source code in court documents, but forgot to ask the judge to seal them from public scrutiny. In a hastily arranged hearing Wednesday morning, DVD CCA lawyers asked Santa Clara Superior Court Judge William J. Elfving to correct their oversight, and he agreed to keep the document confidential. The document is dated 13 January and is widely available on the Web. The owner of one site that placed the 49 140KB declaration online says over 21,000 people have downloaded it so far. The 11KB 50 "CSSscramble" source code, part of the larger declaration of DVD CCA president John Hoy, cannot be readily compiled into a DVD viewer or copier. But if it had not been 51 released online last October, the DVD encryption scheme likely would not have been penetrated. Elfving 52 granted an injunction last Friday, ordering 21 defendants to stop posting DeCSS software -- which allows compressed video images to be copied from a DVD disc onto a hard drive -- on their Web sites. The blunder won't help the DVD CCA attorneys in their as-yet 53 quixotic quest to rid the Net of DeCSS. The entertainment industry frets that such programs could eventually allow widespread piracy of movies. One California litigator who specializes in Internet and intellectual property cases says the boner won't derail the DVDCCA's lawsuit 54 filed last month in state court.
