\_ 75MHz sustaining speed out of 25MHz chip. Is the story real?
\_ they almost had me believing it, except for two important
              details:
                1. They showed aluminIum cans resting directly on the open,
                   supposedly working motherboard
                2. They're British. And thus have a motto of;
"Let the Farce be with you".

\_ And aren't the glass beverage bottles going to be cracked
by the ice inside at -67 deg C?
\_ and how the hell would it really reach -67C, in a
                      rinkydink fridge like that?
\_ ... especially that the freezer door can't even close
completely when they have to run those cables from
the board to outside the fridge.

1/26 What's a good motherboard I can get that will fit in a 1U
case, with sata connectors, gig-e ethernet, and lots of
slots for RAM? I also don't want to have to use expensive
double buffered RAM. Can you tell I havne't bought a PC in
        years? thanks.

6/7 Why Intel? why not AMD? They both run on notebooks(unlike the G5)
Also, does this pave the groundwork for porting OS X to all PC
        machines?
\_ You know, you guys are trying to find good technical reasons
for the move. I think it's actually simpler than that. Economics.

12/02 I have only used Mac laptop (powerbook). However, I am not making
lots of money these days and mac laptops are just too expensive.
To those who have used both Mac and PC laptop, are there cheaper,
faster PC laptops that are no less reliable than the powerbooks?
Are there going to be features that I will miss if I switch, like
        target disk mode, etc?

10/25 What's the difference between intel's C and E cpu for p4? What about
those processor with names like 540, 530? I am helping a friend pick
components for a system. Any recommendations? I am thinking of
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe with P4-3.0Ghz CPU and 1GB PC3200 memory, all for
about $600. Is the newer socket 775 with ddr2 memory that much better?
Not a gamer, just need a fast desktop system for general applications.

8/7 I have a FreeBSD box serving Samba, NFS, DHCP and DNS (as a
forwarder behind a firewall and for a few "internal" boxes.) It's
creaky and old, and about to go, and it gets too hot. Can someone
give me a tip as to whether there are smaller devices that can do
all this (like some sort of low-cost NAS with all the above
functionality) so I don't have to have a PC running in a poorly-

4/18 Anyone add in memory to a PC lately? Do DDR memory sticks have to be
symmetric on modern mbs? I seem to recall that I've added in memory
in the past that was non-symmetric and it worked. Or is this one of
those "it depends on the mb" questions?
\_ By symmetric, do you mean "matched in capacity" or are you refering
           to physical symmetry.

4/12 Is is common but implicit in computer repair to use used but

them? I took a Powerbook Pismo to we-fix-macs and was told to shell
out $351 for reburbishing the processor boards (actually the genius
said they would repair and refurbish the CPU!). If so, it doesn't
seem worthwhile to reapir at all!

8/13 I want to get the 17" powerbook with 1 gig of ram. But it's still

4/8 I need a new PC type motherboard designed. Where is a good
place to get a possible reference design schematic that is
detailed enough to get me started? I plan to mass manufacture
the board. The exact processor is of no concern to me, as long as
it can run x86 binaries. I've checked out Transmeta, and they seem
to have a kit, any one with experience with such design kits?

6/03 Calling all PC HW gurus: Anyone have an EPROM programmer? Last
night I flashed my motherboard's bios while at the same time
booting the machine with crap loaded into emm386. During the
flash, the machine hung, and is now totally toast. This would not
be such a big thing if it could boot up to the point where I can
try the flash again, but for all intensive purposes the machine is

1/25 Do most games now support Win2k/NT or do you still need 95/98/ME?
Is the first clause equiv to asking if most games now use DirectX?
\_ No, they're not equiv because NT won't run recent DirectX games.
\_ NT4.0 does up to directx3 which is all old stuff.
\_ I've been using my Apple IIc to play "Montazuma's Revenge" for

Some of them, in former times, gained high official rank. Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary There is much excitement flying around the infosphere at the moment about certain individuals accelerating currently available technology to it's absolute limits using super-cooling techniques. While we at TotL Labs are seldom accused of following trends in modern computing, we felt that we could make a significant contribution to this effort. However instead of forcing "state of the art" equipment towards the 1GHz barrier which has so far eluded even the most determined accelernauts and overclockers, TotL has decided to attempt to recreate the performance of a modern PC using some old junk (kipple) found lying around in junk shops. Our plan was to prove how undervalued "old" computer components really are. Our conclusions were far more frightening than we could ever have imagined.
