1/18 Is E*TRADE FDIC insured? Thx.
\_ They are a brokerage not a bank. They have SIPC and backup private
insurance. Read their web site. (BTW do you really want an account
with E*TRADE? I haven't had an account there but heard their
customer service is impossible. You might find this useful:
           http://www.gomez.com.)
           \_ Very useful site. Thanks.
\_ I have an account with them. I've only had to ask one question
but got a response within 24hrs. But that's just once, so take
              it as you will.
\_I have had nothing but trouble w/ Etrade. It is hard to
connect with them during the day, it takes days for them to
respond to emails, and you have to wait >>>1h to talk to a
customer service rep when you call. I prefer Datek, even
             though they offer fewer services.
\_ E*TRADE is completely incompetent. They are awful. --aaron
           \_ How about http://www.schwab.com
\_ schwab has pretty good service. Problem is their
commission costs for trades are pricey
\_ Why do people use/need customer support that much? I would
think that once you get things setup, you don't need
                that much customer support
\_ try doing a brokerage transfer. -tom

5/8 Hello everyone! This is Josh Hawn, CSUA Tech VP for Spring 2012.
About 2 weeks ago, someone brought to my attention that our script
        to periodically merge /etc/motd.public into /etc/motd wasn't
running. When I looked into it, the cron daemon was running, but
there hadn't been any root activity in the log since April 7th. I
looked into it for a while, but got lost in other things I was

11/16 We'll be taking all CSUA machines offline in the near future for a Soda
Hall server room reorganization (we're being moved to a neighboring
server cabinet). Downtime will hopefully be minimal. --jordan
\_ Thanks for all your work keeping the machines running! It's
been awesome having soda actually working again.
\_ Update: this is tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

8/9 So I just found out that an old college friend of mine lost her
four month old daughter to SIDS. What is the correct response here?

11/21 Lifehacker's recommending Dreamhost as a personal web hosting service.
Apart from csua, who do you guys use? --erikred
\_ What do you want to use it for? Do you need CGI or PHP? My
brother worked for Dreamhost and said they are unethical. In
fact, he sued them. This refers to their treatment of customers
and employees both. I don't know who or what "Lifehacker" is,

code in Fremont, and AT&T customer service says I cannot transfer my
DSL service because DSL is not available at my new home. Is that BS?
Are they just trying to push me to subscribe to their more expensive

Google Wave No More. The people who worked on it were pretty smart.
They wrote up a super awesome OKR with extremely low bar as a measure
of success, exceeded everyone's expectations by going above those
bars, and got big fat bonuses and promotions as a result of their
        planning. Brilliant.

10/24 Another stock question. If 70% of the trades out there are bot
high frequency traded, then what is the point of those Moody ratings?
Is that to tailer for the other human trades?

6/3 My SLV has been doing much better than GLD. Is it now time to sell?
\_ In general, you should hold on to winners, in my experience. There
is nothing wrong with taking a little profit, or diversifying, but
the most bone headed trades for me ever have been selling stocks
that have gone up 100%, just to watch them go up another 200%.
\_ The dollar is tanking. Hold on to both.

3/24 What exactly does it mean when X currency is "pegged" to Y currency?
How does this magical monetary voodoo work?
\_ I think it means the government of X actively trades currencies X
and Y in order to maintain an almost constant exchange rate between
           X and Y.
