2012/5/8-6/4 [Computer/SW/Unix] UID:54383 Activity:nil | 5/8 Hello everyone! This is Josh Hawn, CSUA Tech VP for Spring 2012.
About 2 weeks ago, someone brought to my attention that our script
to periodically merge /etc/motd.public into /etc/motd wasn't
running. When I looked into it, the cron daemon was running, but
there hadn't been any root activity in the log since April 7th. I
looked into it for a while, but got lost in other things I was

Hall server room reorganization (we're being moved to a neighboring
server cabinet). Downtime will hopefully be minimal. --jordan
\_ Thanks for all your work keeping the machines running! It's
been awesome having soda actually working again.
\_ Update: this is tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

2011/8/9-27 [Computer/SW/Editors/Emacs, Academia/Berkeley/CSUA] UID:54162 Activity:nil | 8/9 So I just found out that an old college friend of mine lost her
four month old daughter to SIDS. What is the correct response here?
\_ "Did she sleep with her belly?" and "Did you breastfeed?"

How do you make a dead baby float?

2010/11/21-2011/1/13 [Computer/SW/Languages/Web] UID:53988 Activity:moderate | 11/21 Lifehacker's recommending Dreamhost as a personal web hosting service.
Apart from csua, who do you guys use? --erikred
\_ What do you want to use it for? Do you need CGI or PHP? My
brother worked for Dreamhost and said they are unethical. In
fact, he sued them. This refers to their treatment of customers
and employees both. I don't know who or what "Lifehacker" is,

2010/11/1-2011/1/13 [Computer/Networking] UID:54002 Activity:nil | 11/1 I'm moving from a home in Fremont to another home within the same ZIP
code in Fremont, and AT&T customer service says I cannot transfer my
DSL service because DSL is not available at my new home. Is that BS?
Are they just trying to push me to subscribe to their more expensive
U-verse service? I'm not asking for any lightening-speed connection.

2011/10/24-11/8 [Finance/Investment] UID:54200 Activity:nil | 10/24 Another stock question. If 70% of the trades out there are bot
high frequency traded, then what is the point of those Moody ratings?
Is that to tailer for the other human trades?

know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.

2009/6/3-5 [Finance/Investment] UID:53073 Activity:moderate | 6/3 My SLV has been doing much better than GLD. Is it now time to sell?
\_ In general, you should hold on to winners, in my experience. There
is nothing wrong with taking a little profit, or diversifying, but
the most bone headed trades for me ever have been selling stocks
that have gone up 100%, just to watch them go up another 200%.
\_ The dollar is tanking. Hold on to both.

2009/3/25-26 [Finance/Investment] UID:52754 Activity:nil | 3/24 What exactly does it mean when X currency is "pegged" to Y currency?
How does this magical monetary voodoo work?
\_ I think it means the government of X actively trades currencies X
and Y in order to maintain an almost constant exchange rate between
X and Y.
\- the peg is the commitment. what you describe above is

in the Italian Rensiassance:
http://tinyurl.com/c83pfd (The Economist)
(and an explaination why the CDS trades should "net to zero")
\_ They won't net to 0 if some people go bankrupt, drops out of
the system and can't pay up. Finance is not a zero sum game.

2008/12/12-17 [Finance/Investment] UID:52234 Activity:high | 12/12 Make sure you buy stocks today. You can thank me later. I am
looking at UYG and DIG, but you might have your own favorites.
Markets are overreacting to the auto bailout.
\_ 1% down? DOW is still above 8000 S&P above 800.
\_ I bought UYG at open for 4.79. It is 5.16 now.
DIG opened at 28.01 and is now at 28.82.
