17/07 I just upgraded from RedHat 5.2 LINUX to RedHat 6.0 LINUX and latex and tex just broke. Did this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions for fixing things? \_ You could reinstall tex and latex from the sources; I usually have pretty good luck with that. http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/unix/unixtex.ftp explains (tersely) how. Red Hat posts patches for 6.0 to http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/errata/rh60-errata-general.html; however I didn't notice anything TeX-related there. If you bought Red Hat, call them up for support. I'd suggest, however, that the easiest way to avoid this kind of mishap in the future is to backup and then reinstall instead of upgrading. -brg \_ Yeah, that is what I eventually decided to do after discovering some newsgroup postings indicating that RedHat's update mechanism is broken. If anyone else out there is considering upgrading to RedHat 6.0, I \_ freebsd. \_ NetBSD \_ OpenBSD \_ Shaddup Theo wouldn't trust the upgrade mode. By the way, once I got it working I was quite happy with 6.0. The GNOME desktop alone makes switching worthwhile. \_ Yeah, stop 'upgrading' your system when nothing is wrong with it. \_ What kind of strangled-brain sysadmin punk are you? This is somebody's home box, for crying out loud. \_ I'm the kind who likes his home machine to just work and doesn't mindlessly 'upgrade' it just because something WAY RAD AND K00L is available. Why treat a home machine any differently? You don't like your home machine to work? \_ So I take it you are still using DOS 1.0 on your box? \_ No, dork. The phrase was "mindlessly upgrade". Don't _ _ _ _ __ ___ _ __| |__ _ _ __ ____ _ ___ | |_| |__ ___ | '_ \ / _ \| '__| '_ \| | | | \ \ /\ / / _` / __| | __| '_ \ / _ \ | | | | (_) | | | |_) | |_| | \ V V / (_| \__ \ | |_| | | | __/ |_| |_|\___/|_| |_.__/ \__, | \_/\_/ \__,_|___/ \__|_| |_|\___| |___/ _ _ _ | |__ ___ ___| |_ ___ ___ ___ _ __ ___| |_ __ _ _ __ _ _ | '_ \ / _ \/ __| __| / __|/ _ \/ __| '__/ _ \ __/ _` | '__| | | | | |_) | __/\__ \ |_ \__ \ __/ (__| | | __/ || (_| | | | |_| |_ |_.__/ \___||___/\__| |___/\___|\___|_| \___|\__\__,_|_| \__, (_) |___/ \_ I gave birth to Norby's love child! \_ I didn't know tara still logged in. \_ Every so often, I think. She's pretty busy with the baby... \_ http://www.quotidian.com has pictures of Norby's love child. use cheap straw man arguments. They're childish, and not considered clever after third grade. And, yes I *do* have a bootable DOS 1.0 floppy which was still working about 4 months ago, thanks for asking, but no, I don't run my company or home computers on it. \_ So why is updating from RH 5.2 to 6.0 a mindless upgrade? Even if 6.0 doesn't have any features which you consider worthwhile, they might be quite useful for others. \_ DOS 1.0 is even worse than its predecesor, CPM. \_ well, one can say that the nfs is borken. \_ my smb mounts don't work anymore after switching from 5.1 to 6.0. what gives? has the command line changed also? \_ You might have to update your userspace smb tools; /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes has a list of the things you'll want to run at any particular kernel rev. -brg |

www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/unix/unixtex.ftp Following are general instructions for Unix or other sites who wish to acquire the Web2c distribution, (plain) TeX, LaTeX (2e), BibTeX, Metafont, MetaPost, DVI processors for the X window system, PostScript, the PCL language in the HP LaserJet, and related programs. They are oriented towards building from the original sources, though some information on alternative packages is included in the last section. Please note that the Web2c distribution is a bare-bones distribution in source form, and building a complete installation from it is a non-trivial matter. For most uses, it is a better idea to install a distribution with pre-packaged binaries for your platform. Please consider joining the TeX Users Group (TUG) or another user group of your choice to help support the maintenance and development of the programs you retrieve. For actual installation instructions after obtaining the necessary sources, see *Note Installation::. Electronic distribution ----------------------- In many places we refer to CTAN:. You can also access CTAN via the World Wide Web, electronic mail, or NFS. Additional drivers, macro files, and other support are needed to build a working system. You can retrieve these distributions (but not much else) from the tex/' directory on that host. CD-ROM distribution ------------------- Numerous organizations distribute various TeX CD-ROM's (and DVD's): * Virtually all the TeX user groups collaborate to produce the TeX Live' distribution once a year; Other TeX packages ------------------ Many other TeX implementations are available in CTAN:/systems', including ready-to-run distributions for Unix, Amiga, Acorn, VMS, Macintosh, DOS, and Windows (in various forms). Although Web2c has support in the source code for many operating systems, and in fact some of the other distributions are based on it, it's unlikely to work as distributed on anything but Unix. It includes complete sources, and runs on all modern Unix variants, including Linux. It contains many TeX-related programs besides those in the core Web2c. However, unless you want to build your TeX library tree ab initio, it is more reliable and less work to retrieve these files as part of the above packages. In any case, labrea is not the canonical source for anything except what was created by Stanford TeX project, so do not rely on all the files available at that ftp site being up-to-date. |

Red Hat Enterprise Linux has fixed life cycles to enable customers and partners to plan their resources, certifications and implementations accordingly. |
www.quotidian.com This site has evolved, though, as life and the web tends to do. Although there's still one resume here, it's for someone who isn't job hunting but just doesn't want to create yet another broken link on the site. There's still a little personal information here, but since we don't have much time in which to update our pages, I wouldn't assume everything is still accurate. What we do have here, though, is a boatload of pictures of one very cute baby, and then whatever else we decide to do with the rest of the 150 megs of space we've been allotted. The "whatever else" is apt to change without notice, so don't be surprised if it does. |
