2002/10/17 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:26223 Activity:high | 10/16 What's the difference between the way win98 does threads vs.
NT/2k/XP?
Win98 doesn't seem to have a real threading system or something. Test
code on Win98 runs "jerky" but the same on the more advanced versions
runs smoothly and handles threads as I'd expect.
\_ I thought Win98 has preemptive threading for Windows apps while

2002/8/2-4 [Computer/SW/OS/OsX] UID:25483 Activity:moderate | 8/2 When I use X from window (Exceed) and mac (DarwinX) and try to
move or resize window, the window frame does not appear, so I
don't have a visual feel where I am moving or resizing to. Any
cure?
\_ Your background might be the same color as the resize lines;
try 'xsetroot -solid darkgreen' (for example) and see if that

2001/10/25 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:22824 Activity:high | 10/25 NT was supposed to be much more stable than Win3.x. Then Win2k was
supposed to be much more stable than NT. And now XP is supposed to
be much more stable than 2k. Sigh.
\_ Thing is, Win2k really is more stable than NT. Sure, it locks up
occassionally, but not the seemingly hourly BSODs in NT
\_ Also, XP supposedly "does away with the decades-old DOS fundamentals

2001/2/12-13 [Computer/SW/Security, Computer/SW/Unix] UID:20571 Activity:high | 2/12 I am trying to use Win95 ftp with skey but there is
no prompt to enter the one-time password. is there a
command I can use through the literal command?
\_ That's strange. It used to work with my NT ftp where it prints
the key and asks for the one-time password. But today it doesn't
do that anymore. Something is broken? -- yuen

2000/2/8 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:17456 Activity:very high | 2/7 How come it takes NT several times longer than Win95 or DOS to copy
a lot of small files to a floppy diskette? Copying a few big files
doesn't have this problem. Thx. -- yuen
\_ does xcopy solve your problem?
\_ I thought it would, but for some reason no. Both xcopy and copy
on NT are very slow when copying a lot of small files like 20KB

2000/2/5-6 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows, Computer/SW/Unix] UID:17430 Activity:low | 2/4 In C, how do I tell how much memory/CPU time used/stats/etc another
process is using? Do I have to be a root process?
\_ In unix it's OS dependent but usually found somewhere under
the /proc filesystem.
\_ /proc is for pansies
\_ First off, the C language doesn't facilitate such things.

2000/1/11-13 [Computer/SW/Unix, Computer/SW/OS/Solaris] UID:17215 Activity:high | 1/10 I'm a non-tech major but would like to be a sys admin. Are there
local classes (e.g. @CSU, Santa Clara, etc) that I can take to
perform basic, entry-level sys admin tasks?
\_ never took any but found it better to learn by doing;
install linux or fbsd or nt or solaris on a home pc and play.
\_ You'll be unhappy if you're doing this just for the money.

1999/10/4-5 [Computer/SW/Unix, Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:16657 Activity:very high | 10/4 Do "dir *1.*" and "dir *2.*" mean anything special in NT Command
Prompt? I tried them and the output contain some filenames that
don't even contain '1' or '2'. Thanks.
\_ NT doesn't do full regexp's on the command line the way unix does.
Try 4dos/4nt/4os/4whatever from http://jpsoft.com if you want that.
\_ This is not the problem. And unix (sic) doesn't do full
