If you've ever wanted to learn more about Web protocols so you could build custom client-side tools to automate tasks--or just so you have a better understanding of what's happening behind the scenes--then Web Client Programming with Perl is the book for you. Wong explains HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) requests and socket calls, then shows how you can use the LWP library for Perl to retrieve Web pages, parse HTML, check whether a server is responding, and more. From Book News, Inc. Enables those familiar with the Perl language to go beyond the capabilities of graphical web browsers for the purpose of automating the retrieval, manipulation, and redistribution of web-based information. Includes discussions of HTTP transactions and protocol, an introduction to writing web clients with Sockets, and LWP (a library module that simplifies HTTP programming). Portland, OR Book Description Web Client Programming with Perl shows you how to extend scripting skills to the Web. This book teaches you the basics of how browsers communicate with servers and how to write your own customized Web clients to automate common tasks. It is intended for those who are motivated to develop software that offers a more flexible and dynamic response than a standard Web browser. Using this book, you'll learn how to: * Automate repetitive queries on the Web * Detect broken hyperlinks on your site * Write simple "robots" that traverse hyperlinks across a site, and across the Web in general Most of the examples in this book use Perl, a versatile and portable language that is already familiar to many CGI programmers and UNIX power users. The book does not teach Perl, but the techniques used should be easily followed by anyone with some programming background and can be adapted to whatever language you choose. Great book for building web 'bots with Perl, June 3, 1998 Reviewer: 70 James Brown (see more about me) from Orem, UT USA I really enjoyed this book. It made using the LWP libraries much easier. It is well written, though repetative in some places (my only major complaint). I'd recommend this book to anyone who does Perl programming and wants to build quick, simple and easy web 'bots to scavange the net for information on your behalf. Was this review helpful to you? June 28, 2003 Reviewer: 72 Sam Stinson (see more about me) from Bowling Green, KY USA I see little that could improve upon this book. Its examples are awful and assume a knowledge of Perl not expected of similar entry-level texts. Avoid this book unless you have a great solid background in Perl. But then again, if that's the case you probably wouldn't need this book. Paperback edition Was this review helpful to you? October 30, 2002 Reviewer: 74 Jason C Norman (see more about me) from nashville, TN United States I personally found this book much less informative than I was hoping. Most of the book is dedicated to explaining the ins and outs of HTTP. There is not enough sample code, and the code that is given is pretty basic. As far as information about programming web clients with perl, I have found that it is more helpful to just do web seraches, and read the examples available on various web sites. The book does do a good job of explaining HTTP and the how web clients operate. I just wish there had been more information about Perl clients specifically. I wouldn't pay as much for this book. Look for it used, it's not hard to find. Paperback edition Was this review helpful to you? Yes No 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: 1 out of 5 stars Once useful, now obsolete, July 30, 2002 Reviewer: 76 Charles Hall (see more about me) from Raleigh, NC USA Notice that the glowing reviews of this book date back to '98. The web has come a long way since then and this book just doesn't hold up well. Don't waste your money on this incomplete, poorly organized, obsolete book. Paperback edition Was this review helpful to you? Yes No 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: 1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time, January 31, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from Suwanee, GA United States About 65 pages are dedicated for http details. This part is fairly well written. But then then you are hit by the reality. LWP is also pathetic. I noticed that the people who gave good ratings for this book did so solely based on it s presentation of http. Not as a http client programming book of perl.
