2/15 Windows Refund Day was fun, though it did not produce any refunds.
You can see just what Microsoft had to say to us at
                http://zork.net/~schoen/dear-valued-customer.html
and various press coverage and such, as it develops, at
                http://linuxmafia.com/refund
Microsoft carefully declined to answer our questions on how to get the
OEMs to follow its license agreement and provide refuns. -- schoen
\_ yeah, that was fun. My co-worker showed me my picture on the
front page of the business section of the Chronicle. --vchang
\_ what kind of bullshit is "PCs sold with Windows preinstalled are
optimized for the Windows operating system by the PC maker to
guarantee the best customer experience. " How dumb do they think
           linux users are.
\_ The question is how dumb they expect the AVERAGE consumer is.
\_ Is my interpretation of the first url skewed, or are they
basically saying that the OS is an integral part of the
computer, not a separate component? -John
\_ It's just from the marketting noise department. Has nothing to
do with linux folks and everything to do with getting a chance
to get the press to pass this crap along to the public.
\_ It's probably what they ARE trying to say... MS tried to
argue that Win95 ran slower without IE pre-installed and
thus it was an integral part of the OS that couldn't be
removed. They don't think the Linux users are dumb, they
just think there are too few of them to count. -bz
              \_ Of course Win95 can't function without IE. It's a lot like
how a car can't function without its 10 disc changer or
how a commercial jet can't function properly without its
big screen projector. What were those DoJ people thinking.

We are always available to answer any questions you might have about Microsoft products and technologies. We understand that part of your purpose today is to request a refund for the version of the Windows operating system that came preinstalled on your personal computer. The license agreement that accompanies the version of Windows preinstalled on new PCs clearly states that if users for some reason choose not to agree to that license, they should contact their PC maker to address this issue. When a consumer purchases a new PC, the license for Windows resides with that specific PC maker, and each PC maker has its own process for working with customers on licensing issues. PCs sold with Windows preinstalled are optimized for the Windows operating system by the PC maker to guarantee the best customer experience. At the request of the PC makers that license Windows for resale, Microsoft must direct you to the PC maker from which you purchased your copy of Windows. Fundamentally, you, the consumer, have a choice of operating systems and PCs. You can purchase a PC with a non-Microsoft operating system or a PC with no operating system preinstalled at all. In fact, more than 200,000 PC makers worldwide will allow you to choose which exact components you want on your PC, from processor to video card to operating system software.

Everyone should assemble at the nearest of our four "Posse" assembly points, from which we will carpool/caravan at 10 AM. Posse organizers and parade marshals will do briefings and check-ins prior to the carpool, and you won't want to miss the t-shirts. Please include if you can offer or are in need of a ride! Please note that the BART parking lot is for BART patrons. We are encouraging everyone to stick together and present a calm and polite, but firm, request for our refund. If you are seeking a refund, we expect you to provide some documentation for the fact that you are not using the Microsoft products you are returning. Bring your computer if you can schlep it, but if you choose not to bring the computer, please bring a copy of your non-Microsoft OS, a printout of your partition table, name tag or raffle ticket from a free OS event, or something else to substantiate that you aren't just a random copyright violator looking for a handout. If you try to use this event as an excuse to actually use Microsoft products in violation of applicable licenses, we will 22 help Microsoft hunt you down and prosecute you to the full extent of the law. If you are not seeking a refund, and simply want to come along for the spectacle, that's fine too. We request that you not get in the way of people getting their refunds, and that you act politely to Microsoft employees and to the media. We will make further information on handling the media available here, since we want to present our OSs of choice in the best possible light without embarassing Microsoft, since they are only giving us the refunds we want. We have received a lot of positive interest in this event, so we are recruiting "parade marshals" to help keep everyone together and peaceful. This will be an orderly event and we don't want anyone to get hurt. The Open Directory Project's 27 Windows Refund category.
