12/28 Help crack DES again. http:/http://www.distributed.net
\_ oh boy how exciting. Get a fucking life.
\_ If you don't like tech projects, don't read the soda motd.
\_ Crunching random numbers over and over again is not
                   a tech project. -tom
\_ You tell 'em Tom! Crush their will, destroy their ego!
You, truly, are the only one who knows anything! Lend
us a tiny fleck of your vast wisdom!
\_ Although I think the DES cracking project is ridiculous, I don't
see anything wrong with others participating. It isn't as if
these people are sitting there putting in real effort instead of
having lives. They just run the client and hope to get lucky
and see their name in lights. What's wrong with that?
\_ Plus, hopefully the government will realize the futility of
their cryptography export restrictions when DES is cracked
in a short enough time (its down to 2 days).
\_ Highly doubtful. The previous cracking attempts
merely resulted in the US govt. convincing most
of Europe & Asia to join in the encryption export
stupidity, to make it harder for us to import
                           software. (Besides, most congressmen wouldn't
know a DES crack from the giant holes in their
                           heads.)
\_ It hasn't started yet, it was just announced. It starts in
           January.
\_ Sillyness about http syntax deleted. It was too silly even for
           the motd.

5/8 Hello everyone! This is Josh Hawn, CSUA Tech VP for Spring 2012.
About 2 weeks ago, someone brought to my attention that our script
        to periodically merge /etc/motd.public into /etc/motd wasn't
running. When I looked into it, the cron daemon was running, but
there hadn't been any root activity in the log since April 7th. I
looked into it for a while, but got lost in other things I was

11/16 We'll be taking all CSUA machines offline in the near future for a Soda
Hall server room reorganization (we're being moved to a neighboring
server cabinet). Downtime will hopefully be minimal. --jordan
\_ Thanks for all your work keeping the machines running! It's
been awesome having soda actually working again.
\_ Update: this is tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

8/9 So I just found out that an old college friend of mine lost her
four month old daughter to SIDS. What is the correct response here?
\_ "Did she sleep with her belly?" and "Did you breastfeed?"

11/21 Lifehacker's recommending Dreamhost as a personal web hosting service.
Apart from csua, who do you guys use? --erikred
\_ What do you want to use it for? Do you need CGI or PHP? My
brother worked for Dreamhost and said they are unethical. In
fact, he sued them. This refers to their treatment of customers
and employees both. I don't know who or what "Lifehacker" is,

11/1 I'm moving from a home in Fremont to another home within the same ZIP
code in Fremont, and AT&T customer service says I cannot transfer my
DSL service because DSL is not available at my new home. Is that BS?
Are they just trying to push me to subscribe to their more expensive
U-verse service? I'm not asking for any lightening-speed connection.

Google Wave No More. The people who worked on it were pretty smart.
They wrote up a super awesome OKR with extremely low bar as a measure
of success, exceeded everyone's expectations by going above those
bars, and got big fat bonuses and promotions as a result of their
        planning. Brilliant.

Our infrastructure has been enhanced over the years and refined to a point where it can reliably handle tens of thousands of new computers. You only need to download a small program, which will talk to our network and begin to process parts of the current challenges. The program uses only the computer's idle time, so when you want to use your computer, the client will automatically get out of your way. The RC5-72 project is now officially up and running, as of 03-Dec-2002! You will need to 31 download a new client in order to participate. Our FAQ-O-matic has been updated with the beginnings of a 32 new RC5-72 section. The ISC has helped us before and we are pleased that they are willing to continue helping us to provide a high level of service for our members.
