8/20 I'm researching into properties around San Jose. They say that the
only desirable areas in San Jose are Almaden and Evergreen. I
did some research and property values for these two are prohibitively
high (one in the 800K, and the other one over 1M). Is there anything
else in San Jose that's not dumpy?
\_ How about Willow Glen? Depends on what you find desirable.

1/21 One datapoint on rental prices, please post yours if applicable.
Please don't give me this "this is why I buy a home" crap. Not

\_ Totally, utterly ridiculous. It didn't work for the tiny little
Japanese many years ago, it's not going to work for Amerikanjins.
\_ What do you mean it didn't work for the Japanese? I thought
that this was a normal size for a Tokyo studio.

\_ not bad. considering advancers vs. decliners on NYSE was something

2/6 Our parent company is considering forbidding us from taking laptops
off the premises due to possible src code loss. Considering that
many of us work from home the majority of the time, this does not
sit well. We need to come up with a proposal for keeping the
src (or entire disk) on an encyrpted drive. I used PGP desktop
a while back but never did any disk intensive activity (eg compilation)

10/21 Lesson request: I'm on a slow network of MS computers, with a
huge backup running and sucking up all the bandwidth. When i try
computer one to to large copy a file from Windows another it is
very slow, but if i use FTP, it is very fast. What up? (I'm
hoping for something a little more technical than "MS sucks").

12.29 Does anyone know a good automatic spelling corrector for UNIX? -jnat
\_ There is no such thing as an "automatic spelling corrector" -
computers can spot words that it doesn't know, but not how they
should really be spelled. If you want a spell checker, try ispell.
\_ Sure there is. The accuracy is just kinda low. What,
you don't believe in AI? Surely we can automate automation!

As the matter is of utmost emergency, I am left to reserve the small room for my personal storage. The remainder of the appartment is being subletted as a "studio". I have bed, futon/couch, lamps, desks, chairs, dining table, TV microwave, kitchenware which you can use. As the date of when (or even whether) I will be returning to the appartment is uncertain, the appartment is yours until we can negotiate some arrangement. However, you will have the studio for at least until end of December. Should my situation improve and I can return to school sometime next semester, I will not kick you out of the studio if it is during the semester. You can have the studio until the end of the school year. Location: This appartment is in the IDEAL location in north Berkeley right across Andricos on Cedar and Shattuck. Next door to Cha Am Thai restaurant and the Post Office, cafes, Chez Panesse, 2 blocks from Safeway, Longs Drugs, markets, Copeland's etc. Washing machine is availble, but there is also a laundrymat down the block. When available: the Studio will be availbe by Sunday Sept. I will be flying in Saturday the 19th to arrange everything. You pay utilities, which includes gas & electric, water is paid by management. Contact: I cannot be reached by phone as not in Berkeley.
