good place that can custom build for you (SSD, large RAM, cheap video
card--no game)?
\_ As a side note: back in my Cal days more than two decades ago when
having a 387SX made me the only person with floating-point hardware,
most machines were custom built.

not needed. A decent-size starter toner cartridge would be nice.
\_ I got a used HP 2200D off craigslist for $250 or so. It's
great, it does postscript and prints on both sides of the
paper, which is nice. Speed is not too bad. -phr

2005/11/21-23 [Computer/SW/OS/OsX] UID:40679 Activity:moderate | 11/21 I've noticed that the OS X Terminal.app and xterm etc are all
slower than xterm / rxvt on Linux/x86. Even a 500 MHz P2 has
quicker response than a 1.33 Ghz G4 when you are logged
into a server via SSH. I'm wondering what could be the cause
of this lag. Is it something that can be adjusted? I find the
sluggishness the only think holding me back from using a Mac

\_ You sick, sick human being.
\_ Think about this for a second: It's a G4 processor. Is there a
PowerPC version of WinXP? No. You could install VMWare on a mini
mac, and then put XP into that, but it'll be s-l-o-w.

2004/12/21 [Computer/SW/OS/VM] UID:35380 Activity:kinda low | 12/21 What are some core differences between a simulator, an emulator, and

\_ Simulator: Model the whole thing by itself; collect results.
Emulator: Model one part; hook it up to something else.
Or, run one OS on another OS.
Virtual machine: A computer inside a computer.

2003/8/20 [Computer/SW/WWW/Browsers] UID:29396 Activity:insanely high | 8/19 How's Netscape 7.1 compared to 4.8? I have a Celeron 400 128MB and
P-III 800 256MB, both running NT. Does 7.1 (using Gecko) perform
better than 4.8 on these wimpy machines? Thanks.
\_ Shit. I use a P3-700 and used a p3-450 for years before that. I
wish I'd known they're too wimpy to do something trivial like
surf the net. Intel told me if I spent $3k on a new computer

2003/8/11-12 [Computer/SW/OS/OsX] UID:29312 Activity:high | 8/11 Mac OS X users: is there such thing as an "emulation mode" in OS X?
90% of the apps I use have Mac OS X versions. But what's keeping me
from pulling the trigger and buying an PowerBook is that 10%. I have
some legacy windows app that doesn't have OS X version. I'm wondering
if there is emulation software and how reliable is it? Thanks.

in perl easily (just extracting data from source) except for cookies.
I generated frames to let a browser handle the cookie transaction but
mozilla won't let me save frame source (!?!). Seems like this should
be easy. Any advice? -jnat

seem to have a keyboard repeat rate and a repeat delay that's different

How do I change the keyboard repeat rate and delay for X? Thanks.

don't work anymore. Is it possible to make them work under screen?
\_ They'll sort of work, but not really. I mean you may have more than
one window. Just use screen's builtin scrollback; it's better
anyway (you can have one per window, tens of thousands of lines and
best of all it's searchable) Just hit ^A-Escape then pretty much
