4/29 In the past generations of hackers/computer enthusiasts, it seems like
the general political thrust was a general distrust of government
combined with an enthusiasm about the future - a classical sort of
"hippy" outlook. I get the feeling now, though, that the newer
generation around here tends more towards supporting the government
and a fear of the future - the Patrick Buchanan outlook if you will.
Any ideas on why this shift? Just a generational thing?
\_ computer geeks are attracted to simplistic, self-centered ideologies.
for those working in a government funded lab, that means socialism,
and for those working in industry that means libertarianism. the
90's saw a major increase in the fraction of hackers working in
industry. they chose their childish ideology accordingly.
\_ Speaking of simplistic, self-centered ideologies.....
\_ Christ paolo, get off the fucking cross and start living your
              life.
\_ Clinton-haters got computers and the Internet
\_ They should be grateful to Al Gore
\_ That is not Patrick Buchanan's political outlook.

4/8 What's a good free e-mail provider? I don't want to use Gmail,
Yahoo, Outlook, or any of those sites with features I never use that
track my personal info and keep changing their interface. I want just
simple e-mail without privacy issues or all the baggage these large,
for-profit companies are adding. I might even be willing to pay.
        Recommendations?

3/10 What email program do people in Cal CS use nowadays? In my school days
people used /usr/bin/mail, then RMail in emacs, then VMail in emacs.
After my days people used Elm, Pine, Mutt (I forgot which order). In
my first two jobs we could tell the seniority of fellow engineers based
on which email program they use at work, because everyone used what
they used to use in their school years. In my last two jobs though,

10/21 Outlook question: Is there a way to configure Outlook such that when I
reply to a message, the "Sent:" time in the original mail will contain
timezone information? I'm working on a project with a team in China,
and it's often confusing which timezones the "Sent:" times refer to in
        an e-mail chain. Thanks.

9/21 So I did it and got myself a Macbook Pro. Any suggestions for the best
PC->Mac transition? After finding out that Outlook is not supported
under Mac; I bought parallels and am installing XP to grab my outlook
mail archive (~1GB) from the original PC disk (the pc itself is
basically dead). Any suggestions on a relatively painless import to
entourage? The Mac Genius guy also reccomended an upgrade to 4GB and

9/22 Gmail's "conversation feature" drives me nuts! Is there a way to
disable that and make Gmail act like every other e-mail client on the
planet? WTF thought this was a nice thing to have on by default?
\_ Umm, why don't you just use another email service then...
\_ Umm, I do, which is how I have something to compare to. I get
mail in at least 4 places only one of which is Gmail. I

3/18 I would like to ask for help exporting my mail from outlook. I tried
using File->Import and Export->Export to a file but that either
did not work (PST usage is disabled on this computer) or didn't bring
along attachments. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.
\_ Check google. There's a bunch of free and cheap tools out there.
There's one in particular I can't recall right now but I'll post
