Kerrys margin over the President with independents should be cause for concern in Bush campaign circles especially after their advertising blitz. Kerry also holds strong support among those who say the US is on the wrong track. For now, Kerry leads more in the Blue States than Bush leads in the Reds. Kerry also has a huge lead among liberals to counter Bushs lead among conservatives. The gender gap is significant again Bush had closed it before, but now it is back-perhaps because of the war. Bush gets strong support from Republicans, but also leads among Catholics, which could be troubling for the Democrat in key battleground states like Pennsylvania and Ohio. In this poll, he is doing well with Hispanics, but we need to be careful because of the small sub-group. If the President actually scores this well with Hispanics, the Florida and New Mexico could be safely in his camp. Bush is still favored as the President who can handle terrorism best. The economy is still tops but the news about Iraq has moved the numbers up on the war. In this poll, 30 said the economy was the top issue, followed by the 20 who cited the war in Iraq, and 17 the war on terrorism. Zogby International conducted telephone interviews of a random sampling of 1049 likely voters chose at random nationwide.
