"You're sure?" Mr. Powell is quoted as asking Mr. Bush in
the Oval Office on Jan. 13, 2003, as the president told him he had
made the decision to go forward. "You understand the consequences,"
he is said to have stated in a half-question. "You know you're going
to be owning this place?" ... In Mr. Woodward's account of the
meeting between Mr. Bush and Mr. Powell in January 2003, the
president is described as having simply informed the secretary of
state of his decision to go to war in Iraq, as part of a 12-minute
meeting in which Mr. Bush made a conscious decision not to ask Mr.
Powell for advice. But, according to the book, Mr. Bush did ask Mr.
Powell "Are you with me on this?" and told him, "I want you with
me." Mr. Powell is quoted as having replied: "I'll do the best I
can. Yes sir, I will support you. I'm with you, Mr. President."
\_ How about getting the Saudi's to agree to manipulate oil prices
in an attempt to influence an American election? Isn't that
           against the law?
           http://money.cnn.com/2004/04/19/news/international/election_saudi
\_ I enjoyed Mr. Powell's rebuttal. It amounted to, "What the crap?
What kinda idiot IS Woodward? I WORKED on that plan!"
\_ Yes, Powell is discrediting Woodward's account: (dang -op)
              http://csua.org/u/6yp
\_ Powell and Woodward went through exactly this a little over
10 years ago. Woodward wrote an account of the Gulf War,
spun up Powell's role as a "reluctant warrior," created
lots of controversty, sold lots of books, and then was
slapped down by Powell, and when no one would listen,
by Bush Sr. My source for this is Powell's autobiography.
\_ Another silly question, what does this ending mean ^^^^
(dang -op)? I couldn't finger either a dang or an op.
\_ "dang" as in "darn". And -op means "from original poster".
\_ Wow, a kind and useful post on the motd! You are a
man of great magnitude! You have our gratitude!
\_ All partisan politics aside, Powell has given so much for
this administration and has demonstrated a loyalty to this
country bigger than his pride. I hope he lands on his feet
no matter which way the election goes. --erikred
\_ I also agree that Powell stayed in Dubya's lineup to make
sure he didn't fuck things up as much as Bush Jr. could.
\_ I really feel sorry for Powell. He's had to deal with a lot of
shit when instead he could have had a great tour

2/20 Ok serious question, NOT political. This is straight up procedural.
Has it been declared that we didn't find WMD in iraq? (think so).
So why did we go into iraq (what was the gain), and if nobody really
knows, why is nobody looking for the reason?
\_ Political stability, military strategy (Iran), and to prevent
           Saddam from financing terrorism.

Record-high gas prices have become an issue in the presidential race between Bush and the presumptive Democratic nominee, Sen. Kerry has criticized Bush for not doing more to bring high prices under control, while the Bush campaign has run ads noting that Kerry once supported a 50-cent per gallon increase in the federal gasoline tax, which would have meant even higher prices. Amid concerns that plans by OPEC to cut oil production could raise prices even further, Prince Bandar went to the White House April 1 to meet with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and to deliver a message to Bush from Crown Prince Abdullah, the de facto Saudi ruler. Afterward, he told reporters that Saudi Arabia is committed to heading off any shortages in the world energy market. We will not allow shortages in the market because that will hurt the world economy, he said. He also said that the president and the crown prince have been in touch on this subject for a while now. Both leaders feel strongly that higher energy prices have a negative impact on the world economy and on the recovery of the world economy, Prince Bandar said. We will not allow shortage of the markets of oil in the market to increase the prices. The ambassador said Saudi Arabia would like to see the price of oil, which now tops $33 a barrel, to be between $22 and $28 a barrel. OPEC has said it plans to cut production by as much as 1 million barrels per day in April, which would further increase prices. However, Saudi Arabia, as OPECs most influential member and largest producer, could thwart those plans.

I was as committed as anyone else to seeing an end to this regime, the destruction of this regime that put people in mass graves, Powell told The Associated Press in an interview. Disputing an account by Bob Woodward in a new book, Plan of Attack, Powell said Bush and all his national security advisers had agreed in August 2002 to ask the United States Security Council to seek a peaceful resolution and to go to war if the effort failed. Powell dismissed Woodwards suggestion that Bush already had made up his mind by Jan. Asserting that the final decision did not come until March, Powell said he was intimately familiar with the plan and I was aware that Prince Bandar was being briefed on the plan. Asked about Vice President Dick Cheney news - web sites Woodward wrote that the two were barely on speaking terms Powell described the relationship as excellent. On another subject, Powell said one or two countries may follow Spains lead and withdraw its troops from Iraq. He said he expected the United Nations to approve a resolution on peacekeeping before the end of the United States occupation June 30. And, on the Middle East, Powell said the Palestinians should seize the opportunity of a promised Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and part of the West Bank. He said Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia was being undercut by Yasser Arafat news - web sites as predecessor Abu Mazzen had been before resigning.
