Though, approaching the portal market from the basis of a good search engine may work quite well.. hmm... \_ Seems like a great way to trade warez... \_ huh? \_ It's step toward allowing for personalized searches. \_ ah, another mad rush for usernames. \_ they may analyze your email. \_ "Smithers ... do you think the radiation from my plant killed those ducks?" "There is ... no maybe about it, sir." "Excellent!" \_ Eeeeeevil Republican corporations making money again!! www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_558848,00030015.htm Google Inc, the worlds most popular search engine, said on Tuesday it is opening a Swiss research and development centre in its biggest drive yet to recruit European engineers and computer scientists. A dominant force in the Internet search sector, the privately-held Google is facing increasing competition from American rivals Yahoo Inc and Microsoft Corp in the race to enlist the brightest young minds in the industry. In December, Google announced it would open an R&D centre in another technology hub, Bangalore. The Swiss centre, based in Zurich, and the Bangalore site will bring the number of research facilities to five for Google. Our goal is to hire the best computer scientists, said Urs Hoelzle, vice president of engineering operations. Not all of them are in the US and not all of them are able to come to the US. Were talking dozens after a year, certainly not hundreds, the Swiss-born Hoelzle said. The company has never disclosed its R&D budget, nor the number of employees it has outside the US. In the past two years, the company has expanded rapidly overseas, particularly in Europe where it has offices in most major European cities. With more than half of its users outside the United States, the company is paying particular attention on expanding its international operations. Google is thought to be finalising its plans for a long-awaited initial public offering this year, a flotation that some banking executives expect could raise $4 billion. As in the past, the company on Tuesday refused to comment on IPO speculation. Developed by Russian-born Sergey Brin and American Larry Page, the Silicon Valley-based Google was incubated on the campus of Stanford University in 1998. |
