3/21    I have two computers, a p3-133 and a p3-500.  They are taking up
        precious space and gathering dust.  Is there any worthwhile cause to
        donate them to?  If I can't turn them on should I bother taking out
        the harddrives and whacking the fuck out of them with a hammer first?
        \_ Computers for schools will take the p3-500.  No one but an old
           lady who wants to use the internet will take the 133.

           Either way, a 133 could be easily turned into a firewall/router.

              want it out of my closet.
              \_ It's a Pentium from about 1994 if it's 133 mhz.  A 233 from
                 then *could* be a Pentium but more likely a P-II.
        \_ Don't whack the hard drives.  Even small hard drives are useful
           for a computer for the poor or 3rd world.  If you're worried about
           data, boot from a Linux floppy and do dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda

4/02    We use Perforce at work for revision control. It seems to work okay.
        Lately, a lot of the newer developers are saying that Perforce
        sucks and we should switch to Mercurial or Git. I have done some

The ACCRC is now home to the famous Junk Yard Super Computer, the infamous free-shelf, and the always popular free Internet and gaming cafe. We are the Alameda County Computer Resource Center, a 501 non-profit corporation. We will recycle anything you can plug into a power outlet that doesn't have food put inside of it on a regular basis. This means we'll recycle your computer, your VCR, your Television, but not your microwave, your washing machine, or your refrigerator. When you give us your computer, you will receive a tax write-off, and we will attempt to fix your equipment and then give it away to someone who would otherwise never be able to afford a computer. If your equipment is completely dead, it will be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. These fees are used to insure that we will have the funds to properly dispose of all non-functioning equipment. We must charge these fees no matter whether the equipment you are donating is functioning or not. Unfortunately, it is not cheap to recycle electronics properly. Any electronics recycler who is not charging a fee is very likely shipping the equipment to China or the Philipenes where it will probably be stripped of its copper and then thrown in a landfill or river. The ACCRC does not ship electronic scrap overseas for the purposes of recycling. The only equipment we send out of North America are rebuilt PC's for donation to foreign charities.
