3/3 Dear Intel: Prescott is a Dog. AMD64 kicks your ass. Thank you for playing anyway! \_ Okay, we all know that Prescott runs 90 watts plus, but can you provide a URL comparing performance of an AMD CPU vs. a Prescott, in the $150-$250 price range of CPUs? \_ Come on, try harder. Prescott isn't in that price range. The 3.2ghz is $278, the 3.4ghz is $417. It might do alright in benchmarks thanks to its cache improvements, but my 2.4ghz Northwood feels "snappier," and the AMD64 eats it for breakfast. \_ You need to start giving people a little more credit. Prescott is in this price range. http://csua.org/u/69f I just had to build a system last week for someone (it was not a Prescott, but I looked at it), and the CPU I chose was $183. I also see the Athlon 64 3000+ for $211. Are there any diffs between the 3000+ and 3200+/3400+ other than clock frequency? (Oh, I do see the increase in L2 cache from 512 KB to 1 MB; that must be why the 3200+ is $270.) \_ 3000 -> 3200 = +cache. 3200->3400 = 3000+cache+clock. \_ thx. \_ anandtech to the rescue http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1956&p=23 \_ For some reason, this link just takes me to the completely useless site http://www.up-d8.com \_ oops, spelling fixed \_ Does someone have power dissipation / thermal design power data for any of the AMD 64 CPUs? \_ Answering my own question: http://csua.org/u/69h FYI, the system I built last week was a Pentium 4 2.8C (800 Mhz system bus, HT) with an Envision 360W power supply and an ATI Radeon 9600 SE with an Asus P4P800 mobo. SATA 160 GB Hitachi drive. It uses 75-80 watts idle, and 135-140 watts playing a 3D game. \_ how did you measure this? |

Memory timings sandra 2004 are faster above 5100 bandwidth with 30e than 30c, I have both. Slight multi speed decrease on Sandra 2004 is not important to me, stability and improved memory timings are. All above items were purchased from NewEgg and were delivered on time or early. Even with its improvements to its branch predictor, the increased cache latency and longer pipeline take a hard hit in this benchmark. csua.org/u/69h -> reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/processorsmemory/0,39024015,39145079-2,00.htm The Prescott chip also supports SSE3, which includes 13 extra PNI Prescott New Instructions commands. However, no applications yet support the new Prescott instructions, so they are currently irrelevant in practice. The fact that this is mostly not the case - Prescott is sometimes slower than previous Pentium 4 variants - is because the chips command pipeline has been extended. Think of the pipeline as an assembly-line with several stages: the more stages assembly line has, the faster can it run, in theory. But if the parts instructions and data on the assembly-line are not in the correct order, the line must be stopped, corrected, and restarted. Intel tries to balance this disadvantage with larger caches, which offer faster access to instructions and data than conventional main memory. But larger caches also mean that the power dissipation of the chip rises. The following tables give the results from a variety of PC systems. In Idleno load mode, the Prescott system still uses nearly 35 Watts more. At nearly 200 Watts, the same system with the Northwood Pentium 4 uses considerably less power. AMDs Athlon 64 3200 under full load dissipates nearly 80 Watts less than the Prescott system. But the Athlon 64 has a disadvantage: motherboard manufacturers do not yet support all of the AMD chips power saving modes, which explains the comparatively small differences between no-load operation and full load. Only if AMDs Cool n Quiet mode is activated does the Athlon 64s power dissipation drop significantly. |
