In an internal memo sent to staff at the English-language Taipei Times and signed by the editor-in-chief Rick Chu, staff were told not to rebel against the company policy. This newspapers support of pan-Green shall not be questioned or challenged, the e-mail said. Green is the colour used by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. The one-page letter in Chinese, e-mailed to department heads and some staff, states clearly that it will support President Chen Shui-bian. I welcome any of you who do not agree with the papers position to quit before the election as soon as possible. Mr Chu confirmed by phone yesterday that he had sent the e-mail but refused to comment further. This is an internal memo, and I dont want to reply to any questions on it, he said before hanging up. Staff at the paper have been told that failure to fall into line will lead to dismissal. I was told that if I write anything against the DPP or too Blue that I would be fired, said one reporter. The opposition alliance of Lien Chan and James Soong Chu-yu is generally referred to as the pan-Blue camp in Taiwan. Mr Chu justified the requirement that reporters favour Mr Chen as a move to balance the scales in pre-election coverage.
