12/17 I'm a die-hard Winamp 2.x user from way back. Has anyone used Winamp 5
and if so, how does its speed and UI compare vs Winamp 2.x ?
\_ you can make the UI pretty much the same as 2.x by using the classic
skin. i dunno, it might be slower a bit, but not by much, and more
features usually do that to a piece of software anyway. otoh, i like
that it has builtin ogg support finally, so i'm sticking with it.
\_ A couple of people have mentioned it's a resource hog, especially
for CPU cycles. I figure stick with what works (2.91).
\_ I was sticking w/ W2 without realizing that a lot of people were
doing the same thing. I really like W5 so far-- it's got j<search
string> functionality, which I was *really* missing. I like the new
           UI, seems fast to me.
\_ Addendum: there's still no intelligent guessing of metadata in
here. How hard can it be to let me specify a few common filename
formats to guess with? "artist - track"; "artist" - "album" -
"track" "artist/album/track" would take care of at least 75% of
              the misnamed files.
           \_ Thank you, motdformatd

2/5 How do you organize your MP3s?
\_ musicbrainz is a good idea in theory. I think there's a Windows client.
        \_ /mp3/[A-Z]/Artist/Album/Artist - 01 - This Song.mp3
\_ what program do you use? (jukebox)
\_ Winamp 2.91. Played with iTunes, it's no good unless you have
complete ID3 tags on almost everything, and I don't. I played

1/14 this is kinda cool: a plugin that automatically sets your yahoo
away msg to the song you're playing in winamp.

(won't work for the guy below... maybe someone can make one for
iTunes.... or maybe a generic one? search some specified tree
of music files and assume any open file-handle is being played?)

1/14 Has anybody else tried iTunes (the player) simply as a winamp
substitute? I'm nearly weeping at how *nice* it is. Would someone
kindly point me toward the kool-aid?
\_ does it play mp3s, or does it need to convert to their format?
           \_ it plays mp3s.
\_ what does it do that is so improved over winamp?

12/21 Whoever said Winamp 5 is not a resource hog should go to hell.
I have a Pentium 3/600 MHZ labtop. That thing eats up most of the
CPU cycle. For those who want something light, go for Winamp 5 lite.
Then again, I don't see any reason for upgrade to winamp 5 light from
winamp 2.9x, since most of the cool features are in the "full" version
        \_ i run winamp 5 on a celeron 500, and it doesn't use more than 5%

12/18 Re: Winamp resource hog: Winamp 5 seems to be doing better than 2 for
me. I use it to listen to soundtracks when playing games, and was
having trouble with 2. 5 works great.
\_ CPU-wise, Winamp 5 seems the same as Winamp2, same for resistance to
skipping. Winamp5 seems to use a few megs more memory. All in all
it's not bad, although it feels a little like it has feature-creep.

11/3 iTunes for the PC has this nifty feature that fades out the tail end
of one track into the beginning of the next. Call me easily
impressed, but I like this a lot. Are there plugins for Winamp
that give the same effect? --erikred
\_ you can turn on 'cross fading' in winamp - danh

10/18 Is there a player that is not a Real product that will play
.ram and .ra format on Windows?
\_ There's a winamp plug in that lets you play Real Audio files.
Google for 'Tara Winamp Plugin' and try to ignore the Tara Reid
           porn.

10/10 This is stupid, but is there any way to get Win2k to use the "old
style" CD player application? I _HATE_ this new skinned version,
always trying to download my song info and just ugly and clunky.
\_ Only way I know of is to reinstall. Better yet, just use WinAmp 2.91
(and not that bloated WinAmp 3.x crap). I've always liked WinAmp
better than any version of WMP.
