2007/5/27-30 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:46768 Activity:low | 5/27 I just spend a few hours on a silly BIOS problem and I'm posting it
here so that you guys wouldn't have to go through this again. My
MB is Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro and the latest BIOS update is version
F17, which is in 2004. It comes with the MB Sil (Silicon Image)
3112A SATA controller, which unfortunately, is outdated from 2002
and does not recognize my Seagate 750G drive-- the boot loader

2005/8/9-11 [Computer/HW/Laptop, Computer/HW/Memory] UID:39064 Activity:nil | 8/9 I had a motherboard die after like 90% of the capacitors leaked.
Appareantly this is a widespread problem (badcaps.net). I'm
wondering, (a) why I hadn't heard of this earlier, and (b) why
there hasn't been a big recall of defective components.
\_ (a) because you don't read /., http://theinquirer.net, .... Do you
read anything? Try to keep up a little, will ya? This is

2005/2/13-15 [Computer/HW/Memory] UID:36162 Activity:high | 2/13 Buying 1GB PC3200 DDR memory for my G5-- any suggestions? I'm leary
of the top 5 returns from pricewatch....
\_ on a G5 make sure you get good memory and not some generic
PW crap. I'd check Kingston to find out what sort of timing
and stuff they'd put on their branded Mac compatible RAM and
then go w/ a generic maker that matches those specs (or

2005/1/17-18 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:35742 Activity:high | 1/17 My DMA is in fact turned on, but I'm hardly getting the 133 rate
in my ATA133 as claimed by my motherboard and hard-drive. What
are some culprits in the lack of performance? ok thx.
\_ How are you measuring the throughput?
\_ You know nothing can sustain ATA133 throughput, right?
\_ And you're running which OS?

2004/12/7-8 [Computer/HW/CPU] UID:35205 Activity:low | 12/7 Followup to the hardware problem yesterday: I down-clocked the
FSB to 100MHz and the problem went away. The memory went from 266->200
the CPU went from 1466->1100, but the AGP and PCI stayed at 33MHz.
Since memtest showed the memory itself is probably OK, and GIMPS showed
no CPU problem, that says to me the AMD 761 Northbridge is the problem.
Thanks to everyone who helped with this tricky problem.

2004/12/6-7 [Computer/HW/Memory, Computer/HW/CPU] UID:35186 Activity:high | 12/6 I'm at my wit's end with a problem. I'm running WinXP and a lot of
newer 3D games make the machine randomly lock hard. There isn't much
pattern to it, but some games do it and some don't. This problem is
not mentioned under tech support for the games besides the generic
"Update your drivers and DirectX" which I've done. Games which crash
include Railroad Tycoon 3, Rome:Total War and Sid Meier's Pirates, and

2004/9/2 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:33309 Activity:nil | 9/2 If i buy a MotherBoard with 2 SATA ports, does that mean I can only
have 2 SATA devices attached or is there some chaining possible?
\_ Only 2 SATA drives, although your MB probably has 2 ATA connectors
too for optical drives and the like.

2004/1/20 [Computer/HW/CPU] UID:11844 Activity:nil | 1/19 Anyone tried to build a Athlon 64 based system? What motherboard
did you use? Any incompatibility problems?
\_ I started to spec it out and then found out that AMD was
going to switch socket types in Q2 2k4 and gave up the
idea. We have a couple of dual opteron boxes at work (newisys)
they are very nice. No problems with Linux (SuSE Enterprise

2003/9/17 [Computer/HW/Memory] UID:10226 Activity:high | 9/16 I got a used (free) computer, but I've realized that it locks up.
I've swapped out the RAM, Mobo, power supply and disk. It still
crashes. (isn't really free, huh). The last time it was a seg
fault in the /etc/init.d/umountfs while shutting down. The errors
seems to be random, but possibly occur slightly more in the AM
wee-hours. So the last thing to swap out is the CPU. It's an

2003/6/19 [Computer/HW/Memory, Computer/HW/Drives] UID:28767 Activity:nil | 6/18 I want to buy a cheap reliable server. It doesn't need to be fancy.
It doesn't need to be blazingly fast (though it would be nice if it
was.) It doesn't need insane amounts of disk or anything. What I
want is it to be reliable and for it not to cost too much. Anyone
have a good recomendation? Would I be stupid to go with dell or
someone like that?

2001/7/21 [Computer/HW/CPU] UID:21896 Activity:nil | 7/20 I just put together this new system. Tyan motherboard 266 fsb,
1 ghz athlon thunderbird, 768 mb ram, etc with 300 watt atx
power. case one starts athlon fan but no power to the board nor
system. case two, which is known to work, powers the fan
(meaning in both situations that when i plug the power cable in
the athlon fan briefly turns on) but still no power to the
