10/21 If you were as impressed with Mozilla Firebird 0.7 as I was, wait until you turn on pipelining: http://texturizer.net/firebird/tips.html Look for pipelining, but instead of using user.js, go to about:config and use that interface to change the three pipelining options. That's what worked for me. --aaron \_ What does it do? \_ Download multiple files in tandem. ie, grab several images in a link simultaneously instead of sequentially. \_ you mean... parallel pipelined porn? \_ new meaning for PPP \_ uh, no. it pipelines http requests in the socket rather than suffering RTT delay to synchronize request/response pairs. some older servers may choke on this. \_ I stand corrected. I guess I can't believe everything I read in Linux Magazine. \_ How do I know when pipelining is working? The user.js method seemed to work for me; about:config shows the options as true. However, network.http.pipelining.firstrequest, which is not user set, is still false. Do I need to flip this to true? What's a good way to see the before and after of turning on pipelining? \_ i don't think you need to worry about firstrequest. if you REALLY want to verify it's working, you'll need to snoop the headers of your http connections. there are lots of tools. any reason why you are so sure they aren't? \_ motd formatting daemon, stat! \_ glad to be of service \_ How bout, pages start loading totally dangitty-smackin' fast? \_ Placebo effect! \_ it depends what sort of sites you are using to compare. loaded sites like <DEAD>sharereactor.com<DEAD> are undisputably faster for me with pipelining. i would guess their setup has high per-connection costs. \_ Well, to be honest I also changed the initialpaint delay. I haven't bothered looking at the pipelining alone. \_ How can you get it to keep the same tabs open the next time you run Firebird? And when I drag links to the toolbar below the address bar, the link doesn't stay. Bug to be worked out in next version? |

texturizer.net/firebird/tips.html -> texturizer.net/firefox/tips.html Firefox Help: Tips & Tricks Firefox Help Tips & Tricks This page contains various tips and tricks for Firefox. Most of these tips involve editing of text files on your hard drive and is not recommended if youre not familiar with basic file and folder usage. The tips are divided into four categories and sorted by importance/popularity. Select Tools Options Extensions , select Tabbrowser Extensions and click Settings . Expand the Category list and select the topmost sub-item its supposed to read Advanced Tabbed Browsing but the Category list is too narrow. In the Window Mode drop-down listbox, select Use multiple browsers only when I open them . Now any link opened by an external program, such as your e-mail client, will open in new tabs. Always display the Stylesheet Switcher The Stylesheet Switcher icon in the status bar is normally not shown when only one stylesheet is available for a web site. This restriction helps protect user privacy and prevent users from stumbling into sites that other users had previously viewed. Andrew Mutch has written a page explaining how to implement this restriction. Prevent sites from disabling the context menu Some sites prevent you from right-clicking on the page to show the context menu. This bookmarklet will disable such attempts with just a single click. Back to Top Web Page Appearance Ad Blocking Advertisements on websites are annoying, often breaking up text and flashing to get your attention. There is a neat trick that you can use to block most of the ads on Web pages. Because of the length of the code in this tip, it is available in a separate page . Disable blinking elements You probably just find the blinking above annoying. Run Firefox from removable media This advanced tip makes it possible to run Firefox from removable media, such as a USB memory stick. This will allow you to run Firefox with your personal settings from any computer, even those that doesnt have Firefox installed. The basic instructions are as follows: In the removable media, create a folder in this example we will use E:Setup . Inside Setup , create a folder named Application Data the name must be matching the name of your AppData folder. Put a batch file inside your Setup folder as well change myRootPath to the Setup path. You can select multiple cells, either by clicking individually on the cells you want to select or by just dragging with the mouse. Once selected, you can use Copy and Paste just like you would on a text selection. Speed up page rendering By default, Firefox doesnt try to render a web page for 250 milliseconds, because its waiting for data. Limit Firefox to specific web addresses Many libraries are now providing web-based online catalogs and access to online databases. Often, libraries dont want computers provided for those uses to have access to the entire Internet. This method will assist you in limiting Firefox access to a pre-defined number of sites. Restricting web access is accomplished by using the proxy settings in Firefox. Read all about how to accomplish this on this page , written by Andrew Mutch.
