10/8 I emailed my friend to her yahoo account and I got the following: Reporting-MTA: dns; http://soda.csua.berkeley.edu Received-From-MTA: DNS; localhost Arrival-Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2003 21:15:21 -0700 (PDT) Final-Recipient: RFC822; XXXXX@yahoo.com Action: failed Status: 5.5.0 Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; 553 Mail from 128.32.112.233 not allowed - VS99-IP1 deferred - see http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-02.html (#5.7.1) Last-Attempt-Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2003 21:15:21 -0700 (PDT) Please don't tell me soda is on the open-relay list. How to fix this problem? \_ Yahoo has (apparently inadvertantly) blocked large swaths of the net because of a broken open relay test. They even have a large number of their own servers listed. Sigh. --scotsman \_ Stanfurd is also blocked according to the motd of a machine I have an account on. \_ Soda is not currently on any of the blacklists at http://rbls.org, and (according to pxytest and http://www.abuse.net/relay.html is not running any open proxies or open relays. I've mailed yahoo; hopefully it will be fixed soon. --mconst \_ How will they get the mail? \_ yeah, this sucks. What's going on? \_ me 2. Has someone mailed root? |
www.abuse.net/relay.html Mail relay testing Mail relay testing We offer an experimental mail relay testing service. It runs in two modes: Anonymous mode sends commands to the server to be tested but doesnt actually send any mail. This can report false positives, hosts that appear to be open relays but actually arent because they reject or discard a message after appearing to accept it. Registered user mode attempts to relay a message through the server to be tested. |

help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-02.html Your connection may be rejected becasue the email server that you use for sending email is probably an open relay or open proxy. These types of email servers can easily be tricked into sending large amounts of unsolicited email. Many email services refuse mail from such servers, until the server has been fixed to stop relaying spam to innocent users. Otherwise, you should call technical support and alert them of the problem. You can check to see if your mail server is listed on several of the public open relay DNSBLs. Please note that if your server is not listed at this link, it may still be an open proxy or open relay. Retest policy Once an IP address has been tested, no further tests are performed for at least three days regardless of the outcome of the tests. Actions based on test results If an IP address is determined to be an open relay or open proxy, Yahoo! |
