9/10 Opus returns:
        http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A45450-2003Sep8.html
\_ "I think there's been three great strips that have gone away over
the last five, 10 years that I really miss: 'Bloom County,' 'Calvin
and Hobbes' and 'The Far Side.' Those are the three strips that
           never should have ceased."
It's funny to think how Bill Watterson and Berkeley Breathed had
a spat. Does anyone have a URL to that sketch Watterson sent
to Breathed? It was someone stuffing cash into a speedboat.
           \_ Wasn't Bloom County a shameless rip-off of Doonesbury? I
remember reading about Breathed doing a wholesale copy of
another strip. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
\_ Bloom County has elements from Doonesbury, but
so does just about every good occasionally politically
oriented comic strip, it's not fair to tar Bloom County
as being a complete rip-off of Doonsebury. - danh
\_ hey, don't blame the motd. Trudeau is still pissed
about this. i don't understand why, since they
                       both won pulitzer prizes.
              \_ http://www.toonopedia.com/bloom.htm
\_ I hated Bloom County when I was a kid. Then again I wasn't crazy
about Doonesbury. But I liked the talking cigarette ones.
\_ so go read Garfield, moron
\_ I love the motd. He doesn't like something you like so
he's automatically a moron. That's so great. You guys
are all so kewl since you know what the right comics are!
\_ he doesn't like the two comics which actually
                           had intelligence.
\_ oh, so Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side
totally lack intelligence? i see. you're
a dumbass. it's all clear now.
\_ no, he didn't like the two comics which were
super heavily opinionated, somewhat weird and
often not at all funny. some people like their
funny pages to be funny. weird, huh? he must
be a moron for not liking that same things as
                              "everyone else".
\_ no, he's a moron for not liking Bloom
                                   County.
\_ Uh huh. Bloom County was only so-so and
for only part of the run. The Earth kept
spinning when he stopped writing it.
\_ Dude, he said, "WHen I was a kid." You're
calling an 8yr old stupid for not liking
                              political strips?
\_ A Google search for "bill watterson art breathed" returns this as
              the first link: http://ignatz.brinkster.net/cbillart.html

11/6 Four more years!
\_ Yay! I look forward to 4 more years of doing absolutely nothing.
It's a much better outcome than the alternative, which is 4 years
           of regress.

12/15 I'm planning on traveling to Europe and I was wondering if there's
any reason I shouldn't be able to use a US power tap/strip (no surge
suppression) with just a plug adaptor (i.e., no voltage conversion).
This would be for use with electronics that accept 100V-240V. While
the power strip is intended for use at 120V, it's just wires, right?
(Also, this power strip has no power LED or similar.) If anything,

\_ Yeah, because CA sure has a problem with not enough dems in power!

2/20 Ok serious question, NOT political. This is straight up procedural.

So why did we go into iraq (what was the gain), and if nobody really
knows, why is nobody looking for the reason?

My thanks to Francisfrom 12 Calvin et Hobbes Sur Altunis for this one! This was printed in the mid-1980's in issue 127 of the Comics Journal. This is a painted self-portrait by Bill from an unknown source and date. Is he just fooling around, or is this a subtle comment on his urge to seal himself off from the public eye? Here's a cute picture from a Swedish edition of one of the Calvin & Hobbes books. In 1992, Bill's brother Tom Watterson had a pop/rock band called The Rels. Bill did the artwork for at least two of theband's releases, using the pseudonym Fang Wampir. In case you're curious about the music, it sounds sort oflike the Rembrandts with a saxophone. Garfield was too calculated and too successful not to freely raid for illicit character cameos. Calvin creator Bill Watterson took these thefts in stride and retaliated in private with a devastatingly effective illustrated salvos, hitting me in my most vulnerable places. Bill's sketch is an editorial comment on my addiction to the expensive sport of power boating and the moral compromises needed to fund it.
