9/3 This is probably really old, but still entertaining for O'Reilly haters http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/entertainers/pundits/bill-oreilly (work-safe) \_ How could it be old if it's referring to August 2003? \_ eh, I was confusing it with the Glick interview. Anyways, here's the complete transcript of that. http://wienerboard.com/thread.php/id=11534&page= and a sound file http://www.littlemeanfish.com/media/oreilyfreakout.mp3 \_ Oh yes, and if you had any respect for Al Franken, it went out the window in the incident listed there. Al went over his time limit by 5 minutes. He spent 6 minutes slowly telling the story of the Polk/Peabody mistake. Granted, O'Reilly should have owned up to the mistake, but the event was a pile-on. The so called 'moderator' was fawning over Franken and Ivins. It was disgusting. (Especially since Ivins has so much trouble with facts herself.) \_ Um, hello. Franken is a comedian, and doesn't paint himself as any more than that. O'Reilly claims to be a "Fair and Balanced" journalist under the fair and balanced purveyance of Fox News. Which has been more truthful? It wasn't a pile on, as you claim. Indeed, if you listen to the cheers of the audience for O'Reilly during his time, it's astounding that Franken was able to speak as long as he did. You know why? Because he's not trying to be something he's not, and people recognize that honesty. --scotsman \_ but I get a sense that Franken himself knows he's a nut. O'Reilly on the other hand ... You could also say, "Even a nut can make O'Reilly look stupid" \_ But he didn't make O'Reilly look stupid except to those who already think he is. He looked like a petty cretin. And when O'Reilly pointed out that Franken's claim of O'Reilly's "lies" was a pretty weak one, and did he have another shot to take. Franken responded by asking O'Reilly where he grew up, in town A or B (apparently claiming that O'Reilly had made two different claims previously). O'Reilly responded quickly that he grew up in the A region of town B. It was pretty sad for Franken, really. This is the guy who called Ann Coulter a bitch several times in his book. Really classy. \_ It was "Levittown" and "Westbury". The difference is East Palo Alto vs. Atherton. There is no "Atherton" region of East Palo Alto. There is no Westbury area of Levittown. \_ O'Reilly claimed the show he was part of had won a Peabody. It never did. Not only that the award they DID win was won after he left the show. How is that weak? \_ O'Reilly's references to an award for the show was a response to criticism of *the show*. His response: "we won a Peabody" referred to the show. He should have properly said "they" rather than "we" and "Polk" rather than "Peabody." However, I routinely refer to past employers as "we" rather than "they"--it's just a slip of the tongue. It's not as big a deal as Franken was making it out to be. Though O'Reilly should have owned up to the mistake and apologized instead of trivializing it. However, he was being called a liar in front of an unfriendly crowd, so I can understand his being a bit flustered. \_ O'Reilly had made the Peabody claim before then too. It was just that this was the first time someone called him on it. \_ http://www.oreilly-sucks.com/peabodyfacts1.htm Shows a previous example that is precisely the same context--someone criticizing the show, and O'Reilly defending it by referring to awards. He screwed up, and should be more open about it. But it's not a big deal. \_ And Ann Coulter is the woman who claimed that the press wasn't making enough of the fact that the 9/11 hijackers were Middle Eastern Muslims. Was anyone besides her not clear on the issue? \_ Ann Coulter is such a bitch. This is the woman that says her greatest hero is Joe McCarthy, and that all liberals are guilty of treason against the United States. Al Franken is great - finally a liberal Rush Limbaugh. \_ Al Franken doesn't make shit up. \_ You may need to read up on Joe McCarthy, and why she says that before you dismiss the statement out of hand. (Oh, and BTW, Coulter routinely uses hyperbole) \_ So what you are saying is that if you agree with someone they can do no wrong? \_ No, and I don't know how you concluded that. \_ Because you dismiss out of hand the use of hyperbole. And McCarthy really was quite the Nazi-lovin' bastard. \_ READ UP on McCarthy? The man ruined lives and created a politically oppressive fog that stifled ordinary Americans from even discussing politics, all to further his own petty career. Hyperbole or not, there are a few people that are simply not heroic, for any reason. \_ Did you read this from a primary source or are you simply parroting what you've been told? Seriously--I've heard these hand-waving claims for quite a while, but once I actually investigated it and read primary sources, I can't believe all those claims. \_ Venona proved McCarthy was 100% RIGHT. Of course, some knew this all along. But as always, the left if full of 'useful idiots', to paraphrase Lenin. \_ Actually, I thought O'Reilly was a pretty smart guy, two or three years ago. |

www.rotten.com/library/bio/entertainers/pundits/bill-oreilly -> www.rotten.com/library/bio/entertainers/pundits/bill-oreilly/ Bill OReilly rotten > Library > Biographies > Entertainers > Pundits > Bill OReilly Bill OReilly At the prompting of California gubernatorial candidate Larry Flynt , a group of protesters clustered around the Fox television affiliate in Los Angeles on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in August 2003. They sought relief from Bill OReilly, the biggest star of cable news. His show, The OReilly Factor , is by far the most popular news-talk program on cable TV. His predominantly-conservative political views have made him the darling of the Guns n Bibles crowd, but his popularity owes more to the fact that OReilly is an overbearing asshole who talks endless shit and takes almost none in return. Taking a page from Pat Robertson s playbook, the assembled crowd held an outdoor prayer vigil asking God to cut short the news commentators life on Earth. In fact, they were asking God for a horrific, painful, sudden, and ignominious death for the cable news celebrity. They stood in the sun and clutched hand-lettered signs calling for the mans immediate death. Led by a priest holding a Bible and a megaphone, the mob chanted their ecumenical prayer in front of camera crews from CNN and Daily Rotten : Dear God/Allah/Buddha/other entity of your choice , we ask you to afflict Bill OReilly with a brain aneurysm that will lead to his slow and painful death. O, Lord, may his blood vessels bulge out of his head and explode without mercy. May he writhe in agony on his office floor at Fox studios right after taping The OReilly Factor . O, God, may he reach for the phone to call 911 and accidentally dial 411. May he desperately gasp for breath and recall all the people he shouted down with no mercy. May he lay on the floor and twitch uncontrollably as he contemplates his worthless life. O, Lord, may he lose control of his bowels in those final moments so that the last and only warm feeling he ever experiences is his own shit. OReilly is just another talking head on television - cable television, no less. He worked his way up through a series of small TV stations and broke into the national market when he joined ABCs World News Tonight . After three years he jumped ship and made a name for himself hosting the tabloid television news show Inside Edition for six years. Ultimately he wound up at the Fox News Channel, where he spends his day berating people on the air. What on Earth could this guy - a political news pundit on cable TV - have possibly done that would provoke people to publicly implore God to effect his summary execution? Its a publishing industry tradeshow where authors come to hawk their new books. Normally this kind of thing is about as gripping as you would expect, but not on that particular day. Former Saturday Night Live writer and political humorist Al Franken was on a panel promoting his new book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right . Conveniently seated next to Al just so happened to be one of the lying liars himself - liberal-hating political commentator Bill OReilly. Franken, known in conservative circles primarily as the mean-spirited dickhead who wrote Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations , proceeded to explain how Bill earned himself a spot in Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them . Apparently, OReilly had mentioned in multiple interviews that his old syndicated tabloid news show Inside Edition had won two Peabody Awards, which he described as the highest journalism award in the country. It had instead won a Polk Award, and that only happened more than a year after Bill left the show. It was a piece about predatory insurance companies who took advantage of poor and elderly residents of Arkansas. The George Polk Award is one of television journalisms three big prizes, along with the Peabody and the DuPont. And, for that matter, he wasnt even there when they won the damn thing. As such, the mixup can reasonably be construed as an honest, if sloppy and repetitious, mistake. Now if OReilly had just said that in reply to Als story, nobody would have batted an eyelash. After Franken had spoken for precisely 20 minutes and 7 seconds, Bill responded the only way he knew how - by trying to incite a shouting match. Despite himself, Bill then proceeded to piss away any appearance of superiority by continuing to snipe at Franken for the remainder of the roundtable discussion. OReilly had flexed a little muscle and put the liberal jerk in his place. It was an unruly performance that Bill and his legion of sycophants could be proud of. Over the weekend, though, a few news outlets took notice of this little exchange and sided with Franken. Which is not that surprising, because Bill has a lot of enemies in the mainstream press. Hes always referring to them as the elite news media and casting them as liberal ideologues. On the Monday episode of The OReilly Factor , Bill screened a brief clip of himself heroically commanding Franken to Shut The Fuck Up. Then he informed his loyal audience that he would not make any more statements on the matter. The next day on his radio show he shared his war story with the listening audience. He started by characterizing Als extra five minutes and seven seconds as some kind of unfair trick: What this guy writes and says does not matter to me, other than he insulted me in a forum where I was at a decided disadvantage. Rather than bother to justify that comment, Bill went on to explain that his response to Frankens monologue was strictly a matter of honor: And you know, as I said at the top of the broadcast, somebody calls you a liar to your face, you dont just laugh that off. At which point, everybody in radioland - except possibly OReilly himself - must have been wondering where the hell is he going with this? Bill did not disappoint: See, in the Old West - and I would have loved to have been in the Old West - Al and I would have just had a little - a little shootout, you know? Now, hes a much smaller target than I am - about four-foot-eleven, but hes wider . I would have had the serape, would have given my squint, and I would have put a bullet right between his head. So I wouldnt have been accountable because I would not have known any better. This explains why, two months later, Bill lobbied Fox News Channel to sue the comedian over the title of his book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right . What no one has proven so far is that portions of the complaint were almost certainly written by OReilly himself. It starts off by deriding Frankens credentials as a political commentator, painting him as some kind of wannabe: Franken achieved some renown as a comedy writer in the 1970s, when he worked for the television program Saturday Night Live. Since 1995, after Franken left a second stint with Saturday Night Live, he has attempted to remake himself into a political commentator. In 1998, Franken wrote and hosted a political television program called Lateline, which appeared on the NBC television network. Upon information and belief, Frankens guests on Lateline included well-known political figures Richard Gephardt, Jerry Falwell and Robert Reich. Since then, Franken has made dozens of appearances on television news programs, including FNC. Franken has appeared as a guest on FNC at least ten times from March 1998 until as late as December 2002. Upon information and belief, Franken is currently attempting to gain support to start a political talk radio program. Interestingly, the complaint completely skips over Frankens critically-acclaimed Indecision 92 on Comedy Central, in which he anchored live coverage of the Democratic and Republican national conventions as well as the 1992 November election. Which means Al Franken actually had his own political TV show four years before OReilly even joined Fox News Channel. The complaint also contains a wide selection ad hominem attacks lodged against Franken. The animus directed against him elicits in the reader a considerable degree of astonishment: Franken has recently been described as a C-level political commentator who is increasingly unfunny. Franken has physically accosted Fox News ... |
wienerboard.com/thread.php/id=11534&page= -> the-w.com/thread.php/id=11534&page= The offending passage read, We too watched with shock the horrific events of September 11 we too mourned the thousands of innocent dead and shook our head at the terrible scenes of carnageeven as we recalled similar scenes in Baghdad, Panama City and, a generation ago, Vietnam. With us now is Jeremy Glick, whose father, Barry, was a Port Authority worker at the Trade Center. Glick: Peaceful Tomorrow, which represents 9/11 families, was also involved. I was surprised , and the reason I was surprised is that this ad equates the United States with the terrorists. Our current president inherited a political legacy from his father thats responsible for training militarily, and economically, and situating geopolitically the parties involved in the murder of my father and countless thousands of others. So Glick: that I would come back and want to support OReilly: It is surprising, and Ill tell you why. Glick: escalating OReilly: You are mouthing a far-left position that is a marginal position in this society, which youre entitled to. OReilly: Youre entitled to it, all right, but youreyou see, evenIm sure your beliefs are sincere, but what upsets me is I dont think your father would be approving of this. Glick: Well, actually, my father thought that Bushs presidency was illegitimate. OReilly: Maybe he did, but Glick: I also didnt think that Bush OReilly: I dont think that hed be equating this country as a terrorist nation, as you are. You signed Glick: What Im saying is OReilly: this, and that absolutely said that. Glick: is that six months before the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan, starting in the Carter Administration and continuing and escalating while Bushs father was head of the CIA, we recruited a hundred thousand radical mujahedeen to combat a democratic government in Afghanistan, the Turaki government. OReilly: All right, I dont want to Glick: Maybe OReilly: I dont want to debate world politics with you. OReilly: YoureI want to Glick: But you do care, because you OReilly: No, no. Look Glick: The reason why you care is because you evoke 9/11 OReilly: Heres why I care. Glick: to rationalize OReilly: Heres why I care Glick: Let me finish. You evoke 9/11 to rationalize everything from domestic plunder to imperialistic aggression worldwide. OReilly: Okay, thats a bunch Glick: You evoke sympathy with the 9/11 families. Ive done more for the 9/11 families by their own admissionIve done more for them than you will ever hope to do. OReilly: So you keep your mouth shut when you sit here exploiting those people. OReilly: Because you have a warped view of this world and a warped view of this country. You didnt support the action against Afghanistan to remove the Taliban. Glick: Why would I want to brutalize and further punish the people of Afghanistan? Glick: So the people that trained a hundred thousand mujahedeen who were OReilly: Man, I hope your mother is not watching this. OReilly: I hope your mother is not watching this because you Thats it. OReilly: In respect for your father Glick: On September 14, do you want to know what Im doing? OReilly: As respectas respectin respect for your father, who was a Port Authority worker, a fine American, who got killed unnecessarily by barbarians Glick: By radical extremists who were trained by this government OReilly: Out of respect for him Glick: not the people of America. OReilly: Im not going to Glick: the people of the ruling class, the small minority. Im not going to dress you down anymore, out of respect for your father. Note from Jeb: I transcribed this from the May issue of Harpers Magazine, Americas oldest continually published magazine. My favorite OReilly moment is when he complains that Hollywood Liberals are all out-of-touch, not experts, why should anyone listen to them, blah-blah blah, and then not only has them on for a half-hour of prime-time, highly rated TV, but goes so far as to interview Susan Sarandons MOTHER. I mean, if Susan Sarandon isnt qualified to have a platform to air her views, how is her mother? Its also funny to watch, because you can tell that OReilly actually kind of likes Susan Sarandon, even though its his job not to. I just think that if people are going to use their celebrity status to make a political point, they should understand when that status gets tarnished by that stance. We all have Freedom of Speech, but only someone who has made millions making movies will get invited onto a news show to air their opinions. When people like Sarandon and Garafalo preach their opinions in a manner which people like me have no means at all to respond, boycotting their work is the only recourse. No, if a movie comes out with Sarandon or Robbins in it that I think is interesting, I may well still see it. But their public behavior has left me less likely to get excited about a film where they are the main selling point. I would feel much better if I could actually debate them, instead of being preached at, but I also have the Freedom to Ignore. Michael Moore, on the other hand, is getting the Polanski treatment. Mike Illich owns Little Ceasaers and didnt own the Tigers until fairly recently. Youre thinking of Dominos founder Tom I-forget-his-last-name I want to say Monahan. Im not going to give my money to someone who is going to spend it in a way thats reprehensible to me. Thats very different from bopycotting people because of their opinions. If you see a Sarandon movie, the portion of the 10 bucks she gets is probably going to a childrens charity, or maybe to a fancy dinner or something. The 10 bucks I would have spent on a Dominos pizza is likely going to Michigan Right-to-life or a fancy dinner. I dont care what his views are, and I wont make economic decisions based on them, but I will make economic decisions based on where my money is going. I understand theres the school of thought that politics and economic decisions should be separate do whats best for you economically with your money, and whats best for you politically with your vote, but I sont subscribe to it. My original post meant to point this out - conservatives OReilly included have problems with the celebs supposadly not because of their views, but because they spout-off ill-informed opinion that shouldnt - but supposadly do - carry the same weight as the experts informed opinions. Which is why I find it ironic that OReillys response is not to ignore said opinion - which would make sense - and instead choose to devote entire prime-time shows to these people and their mothers, instead of to the experts - which is what hes saying should happen. The right just wants to set up the strawman so they can spend a lot of time and energy destroying it. Its easy to make Janene Garafolo look dumb on TV, so theyll take the easy way out, instead of getting someone on there to have an informed debate on the issues. Notice the right NEVER has any right-wing celebrities who pop off ill-informed James I agree with every single thing Rudy Guliani ever did Woods, Im looking at you on. Can you imagine the field day OReilly would have had with him if hed said that about Bill Clinton? I think its a perfectly acceptable form of freedom of speech by responding to a person whos views you agree with by not buying what they sell or ignoring them completely. Not that I would always do that, but Hollywood has to realize that free speech goes both ways, and its not blacklisting if people stop buying into their products because of their views. If Hollywood wants to talk it, they have to be willing to take whatever consequences come with it, because free speech applies to all American citizens, not just Hollywood people. Why is it those in the arts industry get villified so much more than others? Heres some news for ya: I dont know if you actually WATCH films, but Polanski and Moore BOTH deserve the money and the awards theyve won for their work. Just like Tyson deserves his purse percentage when he gets his ass handed to him by Lewis again later this year, just like for English peeps here Roy Keane deserves his paycheck for his work at Manchester United. Does everybody with a stain in their past not deserve to work ever again? Originally po... |
www.oreilly-sucks.com/peabodyfacts1.htm The Peabody Award Spin The Truth About The Peabody Awards In February, OReilly gave a speech seemingly taking credit for winning a coveted Peabody award while an anchor at the tabloid TV show Inside Edition. After comedian Al Franken pointed out that the show never won a Peabody, OReilly retorted, in Mamet-esque syntax OReilly Factor, 3/13/01: Guy says about me, couple of weeks ago, OReilly said he won a Peabody Award. Note From The Webmaster: Because they edited it out of the transcript. On a recent OReilly Factor show I personally saw OReilly tell a radio talk shot host who dared to dis-agree with Bill and say he was not a real journalist tell him that he would put his peabody and his journalist degrees up against his credentials any time. This was around 6-1-01, I forget the exact date but remember it clearly. The guest was Bernie Ward from a KGO radio talk show who was talking about gary condit and the 24/7 news coverage of him on fox news. |
