1/26 The Wrestler: A lot better than I expected. The previews don't
        do it justice.
\_ The motd isn't allowed to like good movies. Come back when
you like Star Trek movies, Battlestar Galactica, and
           Transporter 3.

1/26 The Google logo on doesn't honor Lunar New Year. Hmm.
        \_ Isn't that tomorrow?
           \_ It's today 1/26.
\_ it's Chinese New Year. The New Year is not a pure Lunar for almost
400 years. While is not very politically "sensitive," it is
more accurate description, as the calendar was commissioned,
maintained and issued by the Chinese Imperial Court and funded by
Chinese tax dollars. Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese and others
had no resources nor technology to maintain the calendar like that.
Back then, Chinese influence was a lot more previlant.

1/26 Can somebody show me a procmail rule which drops email from
        users {foo, bar, baz}@{host1,host2,host3}
I dont want to have to create a rule set like this for
        each combination:
        * ^From:
        Thanks Motd!
\_ Have you heard of regular expressions?
\_ I was not sure if there was some complicated way of
quoting in the procmailrc. Is this correct:
              * ^From: (foo|bar|baz)@host[123]
or do I have to do something special with the (|)[].

1/26 Bought my XSi kit with 18-55 and 55-250 for only $750. The price
has since then jacked up to about $950 because of US $ and
the end of Canon's $100 rebate. I'll be selling it back on
eBay for a profit. Expect Canon to release something completely
new and better for this year's PMA. Canon rules.
\_ Canon encourages employees to go home early and make more
\_ those lens you have are practically useless.
\_ Obsolutely correct, and the people who buy from me on eBay
do not get it. They're happy with a cheap camera, and I'm
happy with extra cash on hand. Win-win!

1/26 Merrill Lynch chief economist declares we are in depression.
(sorry, no link - it's an internal note)
Sedacca of also calls depression against current
consensus of 2nd half recovery (go to, "depression")
"The main point I would wish to deliver here: An economy built on so
much leverage, deteriorating so quickly, is going to collapse, no
matter what the stimulus (bailouts, buyouts, TARP, Stimulus packages,
quantitative easing, mortgage market manipulation, etc). The economic
avalanche is upon us. And if you've ever witnessed an avalanche, there
is no way to stop it."
My take: Sedacca ignores that "out of recession" == one quarter of
positive GDP growth (by one def'n). Quarterly GDP is qoq, not yoy, so
it's easy to go positive from 4Q08. You can have depression + "out of
recession" at the same time. Yes: Tea and no tea simultaneously.
\_ FUCK did you get past the babelfish puzzle?
\_ what's with all these tools i need to collect?
\_ I hope you kept the pocket fluff.
\_ I guess the chief economist of Merrill Lynch would know something
about basing your entire economy on imaginary leverage.
\_ The IBs are screaming bloddy murder, so they can get more handouts
\_ The IBs are screaming bloody murder, so they can get more handouts
from the taxpayer. The Economist predicts that the recession will
end mid-year and we should see modest growth by the end of the
\_ don't forget, "end of recession" == positive GDP growth for one
quarter (by one def'n). We can therefore not be in a recession
while in a depression simultaneously -op
\_ Yeah, well, a few random idiots are predicting depression.
The Economist is not. We will see who is right. I know
who has a better track record.

More companies force workers to take [unpaid] time off.
\_ Even President Barack Obama alluded to the growing use of
furloughs in his inauguration speech when he said, "the
selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than
see a friend lose their job."

1/26 JPL, LLNL, Lockheed, etc. Are these considered "government jobs"?
Do you get your check from the US government? Or are they
        separate entities?
\_ Lockheed is private (defense contractor). JPL and LLNL are gov.
Cal is gov - you get your paycheck from the UC Regents.
\_ JPL is run by Caltech so it is not a government job. Paycheck
says Caltech and employees are not civil servants.
