1/12 Is this an example of terrorism?
"The problem was, how do you find the people on the blacklist? It's not
like you had their address and telephone number. The normal procedure
would be to go into a village and just grab someone and say, 'Where's
Nguyen so-and-so?' Half the time the people were so afraid they would
say anything. Then a Phoenix team would take the informant, put a
sandbag over his head, poke out two holes so he could see, put commo
wire around his neck like a long leash, and walk him through the
village and say, 'When we go by Nguyen's house scratch your head.'
Then that night Phoenix would come back, knock on the door, and say,
'April Fool, motherfucker.' Whoever answered the door would get wasted.\
As far as they were concerned whoever answered was a Communist,
including family members. Sometimes they'd come back to camp with
ears to prove that they killed people."
        \_ this is:
           http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1111203/Protesters-clash-police-100-000-strong-London-Gaza-demo-descends-violence.html

\_ As much as the last administration tried to claim the
              contrary, protest is not terrorism.
\_ it is, if it's done by saracens!

1/12 Sometimes my Thinkpad hangs for 5-10 minutes when I unsuspend it.
Sometimes it comes back in only 10 seconds. Whats up man? I've
noticed that my MacBook is starting to take a while too (5-10
seconds) but the old MacBooks were almost instantaneous. I've
experimented with turning off services, and the only one that
seems to do the trick is closing Yahoo Messenger, which...
isn't even a big binary. This is very baffling.
\_ Do you have firefox running when you suspend it? I've found
that unsuspend takes a long time sometimes if firefox is
running. Exit firefox before you suspend, see if thep
           problem occurs.
\_ Do you mean suspend (state saved to RAM, minimal power continues) or
hibernate (state saved to disk, powered off)?

1/12 I bought a camera from Costco 2 months ago and the price dropped
by another $80. Costco has a 3 month return policy even on
electronics. Do they give you the price difference (price
guarantee)? I'd like to keep it but if not, I'll just return it.
        \_ Why not call them?
\_ The quick answer is yes. The long answer is that you might need
to do the return-buy again cha-cha.

1/12 Californians fleeing to other states in record numbers:
        http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090112/ap_on_re_us/fleeing_california
\_ Thank god, I hope this will ease up with congestion. On the
other hand, this may result in Latino explosion... hmmm....
\_ OH NOES! THE LATINOS ARE COMING!
\_ I don't mind more Salma Hayek and Yurizan Beltran.
\_ "...in fact, the state's population continues to increase
              overall"
        \_ Yay!
\_ So you think California sucking ass is a good thing? Did
              you read the article?
\_ I think that California could do with a little more fleeage.
\_ I would flee CA if my job wasn't so awesome.
\_ It's in the 60s in January here in SFBA. It's 16 in Kansas. Not
              moving.
\_ It's in the 80s here in SoCal in January, which is why
I did move. Arizona and Florida are also nice this time
of year, so it's not all about weather.
\_ But Arizona and Florida suck in the summer.
\_ Suck in general. Sorry, can't stand most of non-
California's attitude toward race and politics.

\_ do you have a thick accent and wear People's
                          republic of Berkeley tshirts?
\_ what year are you living in, new england is fine.
\_ Boston is the new Sunnyvale.
\_ Somerville is the new Sunnyvale.

1/12 Good news everyone! You get to enjoy another month of instability, since
the manufacturer dropped the ball and the case+power for the server we
ordered on 12/8 has been delayed to 2/16! Yay! --t
\_ where did you order this?
\_ This is why you buy from HP or Dell and not some White Box POS.
It used to not be worth the premium to pay for a name brand,
but these days the big makers are competitive. I always built
my PCs from scratch, but I haven't built a PC in years.
\_ Can you cancel that order? It doesn't sound like a good deal.
\_ Why don't you post the specs (configuration, price, and source)?
Perhaps someone on the motd can point you to a better deal from
a vendor that can actually deliver.

        Kicks slumdog's ass.
\_ why do people like slumdog so much?
\_ indianspotting. bollywood opium chic. Mexico is tapped.
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_to_Hell_(film)_
\_ That was 20 years ago!
              \_ That movie was AWESOME.
\_ Let me guess. You're Star Trek Movie Guy.
\_ He's not, but I would ask the same question. -stmg

1/12 What is the purpose of having best men and groomsmen besides
standing around so the groom doesn't look like a loser? Why would
you need 2 groomsmen, let alone 3, 4, 5? Do they actually DO
anything besides costing you money and trouble to get them
exact same type of tux+bow ties? -wedding dumb
\_ yes. Typically you're supposed to represent family members
from either side as the groomsmen. Normally the person being
the godparent of the childe would be there. Back in the day
weddings weren't just about the couple, they were about the
uniting (think: politics) of two houses. Now they're just
glorified ushers. Just go to vegas. save your money for the
           5 or 10 year anniv.
\_ Forget Vegas. Do a Taco Bell wedding.
\_ The best man is supposed to keep track of the wedding ring. And in
Chinese wedding the best man is supposed to divert to himself any
drinking challenges directed at the groom.
\_ Does that ever actually work? Most weddings I've been to, groom
              is soused in no time.
\_ In Hong Kong there used to be only best man and maid of honor,
no groomsmen or bridesmaids. And the best man and maid of honor
had to be single. Nowadays I don't know.

1/12 new soda to run FreeBSD, we have taken it back!
        \_ Daemon worshippers.
\_ there goes the linux holy land
\_ "But Stallman and Linus between them would make a better world."
\_ "If it lives only for a while, Tiberias, it still has lived."
\_ well at least the new logo is cooler
\_ I hope they start a traition of training sysamins to run freebs
           on future politburos.
