11/10 As an employee of a company, I'm prohibited to short my own company's stock. I'm also prohibited to trade during blackout period. But am I prohibited to day trade my own company's stock during open period? Thanks for any help! \_ If you were prohibited during open period, why have a blackout period at all? \_ You are always prohibited from trading stock if you have material insider information, but otherwise, you should be allowed to trade in your own companies stock during open trading periods. Why not ask your company instead of the motd? \_ Vader's wingman panics at the sight of the oncoming pirate starship and veers radically to one side, colliding with Vader's TIE fighter (MMIFF delayed) |

He won in two landslide elections. \_ You are aware of the blatant racism involved in the prop. 14 campaign, and that the supremes overturned it in '67 anyway? \_ if I'm a landlord, I could care less. Go Pete Wilson! \_ What does Pete Wilson have to do with the '60s? Oh I see, you are just a dumb troll. \_ Maybe you're too young to remember this but Pete Wilson was a racist and people loved him for Prop 187. YES ON PROP 187 Pete. http://members.tripod.com/~cochiseguardian/NEWS/WilsonDefImmStance020503.html \_ ofc not, he's a troll. \_ Yup. He won in two landslide elections, better than how Clinton did in his two. \_ But Obama just won a larger percentage of the vote than Reagan in '80. \_ "Gov't should protect people from each other but not from themselves." 11/11 The animated Clone Wars TV series is pretty cool, no? \_ No. \_ I've been watching it from http://starwars.com and I must admit it is exceeding my very low expectations. -ERic \_ Yeah I expected crap. I've watched the movie and a couple eps it seems to be improving each time around. The animation seems to be improving. There are some moments that capture the best of what Star Wars is about. The acting was so terrible in parts of Ep1-3 that these animated characters are actually an improvement in some respects. The Star Wars universe itself requires a certain willful suspension of disbelief but that's ok. -op \_ The southpark bit where lucas and spielberg meet indy jones by a video game machine is much better and more realistic. \_ Except for the most recent eps. (R2 gets lost), I've found the series to be pretty enjoyable. \_ Am increasingly of the opinion that they should have done the entire first three movies this way. Ah, well. \_ Agreed. Clone Wars seems almost like Lucas' apology for making Eps. 1-3. |

11/11 I want a home nas so my laptops aren't always running out of space, what's a good buy? \_ I did a bunch of research and ended up with Dlink DNS-321. It is newer than DNS-323 with less problems. It doesn't have as much buffer as DNS-323, but if you're transfer files bigger than 32 megs, the sustained rate for both are equivalent. I bought a Western Digital green (5W 5400RPM) and mixed it up with Seagate Barracrasha (9W 7200RPM) for Raid-0. I know it's not the best of mix (5400 and 7200) but I did it for redundancy reasons. I don't trust either brands as I've had failures in the past from these two companies. Hopefully, the mix will allow one crash a lot sooner than the other, instead of both at the same time. If performance is a big thing for you, get two 7200RPMs. By the way, WD green is really quiet!!! I love it, I can barely hear it at night. Seagate is slightly noiser, but not by much. \_ Can it hotswap disks? \_ Not this one, but DNS-34X something can do it (the one with 4 drives). You'll pay a premium for it though. I got DNS-321 because it's quite good for the price. \_ You can get a used NetApp on EBay for really cheap. \_ I'm told that Drobo + DroboShare is very nice. I also know a several people who are very happy with Apple's Time Machine. \_ drobo sucks. it's loud and doesn't save your data. droboshare doesn't like non-ascii characters, even if it is HFS+J formatted \_ Any opinions on the netgear nases? \_ Qnap. 11/11 Dumb question. My apartment has a bunch of inter-computer file exchange going on. Should I get a switch instead of a router to minimize traffic? Does it really make a difference? Let's say two computers exchanging info with each other are on the switch and the switch is connected to the router. The router will never know about the transfer between the two computers right? \_ It depends on whether they are on the same VLAN or not, but you are generally correct. Are you worried about overloading the router, or is this for <ahem> security concerns. \_ if your "router" is one of those Netgear/Linksys wireless gateway things, a switch won't help that much, and it should already be keeping local nw traffic apt-side only and w/a switch capability |

Well that doesn't seem like a smart move now does it? \_ No! I want rich people to pay! -poor student/socialist \_ Yes! Bailout stupid people! It's OK to be "unlucky"! \_ Who else has to pay taxes on unrealized income? \_ the people responsible for it, obviously! \_ No on pays taxes on unrealized income except for (formerly) people who excercised options and held them. \_ No one pays taxes on unrealized income except for people who excercised options and held them. You don't know what you are talking about. \_ An exercised option isn't unrealized income, it's non-cash realized income. If you work for a company that buys you a helicopter as part of your compensation, you have to pay taxes on it, and if you crash the helicopter, you still have to pay taxes on it. -tom \_ It is today, but it's stupid to think of it ass realized income. Unlike a helicopter, you can't do anything with your stock other than sell, and at that point it becomes realized. \_ But your stock is making money. Getting to invest your money pre tax and not taking the tax hit until you actually use the money is a huge tax win. That's why people being paid in stock is such a great tax scam. \_ You can vote with it. That can be valuable, especially if you have enough stock. \_ I am pretty sure that the latter part of your statement is incorrect: http://tinyurl.com/667xlb If you crash a car in an accident, you can take that as a loss, for example. IANAL. Also, a helicopter is a tangible gain, while a stock certificate is not. \_ You can take the car/helicopter as a capital loss, but you still have to report the income. -tom |
