7/14 Wall-E is totally annoying. That horny iron POS has the IQ of
a 2 year old kid. It's like that annoying pitbull you see on TV
that always wants to hump other dogs or other people's legs.
        \_ ^annoying^cute. Its a child's movie, get over yourself.

7/14 Help sendmail experts. I forward email from my own domain to
http://gmail.com. I have never had any problem until recently. The problem
happens only when eBay sends an email to my domain (as
member@ebay.com). I receive the mail on my domain/my machine, and
when it tries to forward to gmail, I get the following:
         Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; host <DEAD>gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com<DEAD>[w.x.y.z]
said: 550 5.7.1 Unauthenticated email is not accepted from this
         domain.
l31si10176981rvb.6 (in reply to end of DATA command)
What could be causing this and how do I fix it? Thanks.
\_ anti-joe-job/spam measures, probably relying on SPF dns records. See
http://spf.pobox.com Mail forwarding is a known problem for SPF,
though you may be able to fix it for just your case. -ERic

7/15 help, if i see anyone driving a Land Rover or Humvee in a non
combat situation I automatically think they are an asshole.
        \_ what's wrong with that?
\_ Look at the way those cars were advertised a few years ago.
They are marketed as "fuck you" cars. No duh people who own
They are marketed as "f*** you" cars. No duh people who own
           them are assholes.
\_ Feel the same way about Jeeps?
\_ My 1996 Jeep Cherokee (169.2in) is shorter than a Honda Civic.
\_ So what? When people complain about SUVs and the people who
buy them, the car's length is generally not what they're
objecting to. What on earth are you trying to say?
\_ I'm just trying to say not all SUVs are equally bad-ass,
in terms of the space that it takes up and gas mileage.
Mine has better gas mileage than some full-size sedans.
Mine has better gas mileage than some luxury sedans.
Mine has better gas mileage than some luxury sedans. -- PP
\_ Doesn't change that Jeep was designed for combat.
\_ Also designed without shock-absorbers or comfortable
seating. Hardcore means no more kidney stones.
\_ I wished that Cal Tech student burned down more Hummers.
           I totally support his cause.
\- ARCHIMEDES DEATH RAY vs HUMMER!
\_ if you really want to punish those assholes, lobby congress don't
do anything about the high gas prices. Let these road bullies
PAY for their choices. Right now, we would rather invade another
country than willing to let gas price rise.

7/14 anyone know this guy?
A disgruntled city computer engineer has virtually commandeered
San Francisco's new multimillion-dollar computer network,
altering it to deny access to top administrators even as he
sits in jail on $5 million bail, authorities said Monday.
        http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/14/BAOS11P1M5.DTL&tsp=PSB
\_ The article is short on technologies involved. It sounds vaguely
like he commandeered their domain's administrator account.
\- i suspect waterboarding would be successful in this case.
\_ Is that you in the sfgate comments?
\- no, i didnt not read the comments.
\_ probably better that way. they make me sad.
\_ I enjoy how the article says there is no known motive. Anyone who
has hung out with disgruntled sysadmins know that no motive is
           needed.
\_ No, but he is the poster child for a BOFH. I wish I knew him,
so I could shake his hand.
\_ Having worked with IT guys who couldn't comprehend the fact that
IT is fucking support and not an ends to itself I wish I knew
IT is f***ing support and not an ends to itself I wish I knew
him so I could kick him in the balls.
\_ Depends. IT can be support or it can be an ends to itself.
For the city I'd say IT is a big part of what they do.
\_ IT by itself is nothing. IT is a tool to make other
tasks easier. I accept that. Keep the tools running
is an honorable job. Just admit that's not what you
                    are doing.
\_ Well it depends. I think you are too limited in
your scope. There are a lot of situations where the
tool is more important than the operator. Making a
job so simple that a monkey can do it is one of the
areas where IT can help and in those instances I
think the IT adds more value than the actual "doers".
At that point where IT is contributing more
significantly to the bottom line I wouldn't say it
is a supporting role anymore, but a key role.
Addendum: What role you would say IT plays at companies
                       like eBay?
\_ Or Amazon, with the EC2 project?
\_ it might be a big Peoplesoft install.
\_ He made $149,269 working for the gov't, which is not bad now is it?
\_ Previous motd postings lead me to believe that this makes him
rich. Still won't make $5m bail, though.
\_ This is a lot of money, almost as much as I make as a Director
in the private sector. Maybe those public sector IT geeks are
              overpaid afterall...
\_ Plus he can't get fired even when he's clearly got issues and
he probably has better benefits than you do, too.

7/15 Real Mac iPhone docking station costs too much. Where is a good place
to buy 3rd party docking stations that are GOOD? I'm a bit wary
of eBay after 2 incidents. Thanks for any advice.
\_ You spend 2-300 bucks on a phone and $70 a month on service and
the 50 dollar docking station is too much?
           \_ It's only $70 a month? Where?
              \_ It's always $70/month. I'm paying for $129.00/month
for 2 iPhones. It's always been like that. I have the
3G BTW. And you'll pay like $20 extra for tax, FCC,
anti-terrorist, and vote for GWB fees. Those stuff.
\_ Isn't the min plan 40 for voice and 30 for data? I never
even come close to 450/month non nights/weekends minutes so
all I need is the minimum voice plan. Then again I don't
own an iPhone so I may be confusing the plans.

7/15 Nouriel Roubini feels a great disturbance in the Force:
This is by far the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
Hundreds of small banks with massive exposure to real estate (the
average small bank has 67% of its assets in real estate) will go bust.
Dozens of large regional/national banks (a la IndyMac) are also
bankrupt given their extreme exposure to real estate and will also go
        bust.
Some major money center banks are also semi-insolvent and while they
are deemed too big to fail their rescue with FDIC money will be
        extremely costly.
In a few years time there will be no major independent broker dealers
as their business model (securitization, slice & dice and transfer of
toxic credit risk and piling fees upon fees rather than earning income
from holding credit risk) is bust ...
\_ Young Padawan, you have obviously never lived through a real
recession. My WFC is up 25% today, BAC up 10%, KRE and KBE up
recession. My WFC is up 33% today, BAC up 22%, KRE and KBE up
           almost as much...
