10/22 So what's the carbon footprint of the fires? \_ Trees -> fire -> carbon footprint. Therefore, we should wage a pre-emptive war on trees. \_ I heard California has a fire problem precisely because of a long standing braindead policy of no preemptive fires. -- ilyas \_ Your FUCKING brillian ilyas, can I have your baby? \_ You can have my baby in exchange for your technology used to impregnate idiot male motd trolls. -- ilyas \_ Hey Smokey, he's right. \_ I hadn't thought about that, but good point. -op \_ I thought people stopped doing that in 1995. \_ which shows that preemptive wars are sometimes the solution \_ Please report to the preemptive herd-cull center immediately. \_ peaceniks do not allow firemen to cull dead or dying trees \_ If you believe the 'zero carbon footprint' argument of the biofuel proponents, then burning forests are net zero too, as they're not putting carbon into the environment that wasn't there in the first place. Trees will grow to replace them, taking that carbon right back out. It is carbon dug out of the ground (coal, oil, gas) that is the cause of the 'greenhouse gas problem'. |

10/22 Why the fuck isn't Google going down today? I'm getting a bit of anxious. -short at 645 guy \_ Buy a call. \_ Are you shorting Apple too? \_ You should get a bit of English. \_ Are you the "company X" guy below? If so, you're a perfect example of why geeks who think they know something should not short stocks. -tom \_ ^short^touch \_ Shorting: potential loss is infinity, potential gain is 100%. Buying: potential gain is infinity, potential loss is 100%. Shorting is stupid and amazingly risky. And no, I don't believe you shorted google, but it's cute to think you might start another 20+ page troll. That isn't due for another 9 days. \_ Potential loss is not infinity if you have any damn clue. Covered calls. When I say "short" I mean options and not an actual short sale. \_ When people mean options, they say options. We can't read your mind so be clearer next time. |

10/22 http://www.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/10/22/nasa.air.safety.ap/index.html NASA keeps air safety data private to avoid public panic. \_ If we give people real things to worry about, they might stop caring about the War on Terrah. \_ NASA? Shouldn't FAA be doing this? \_ NASA = Nat'l _Aeronautics_ and Space Administration. Part of their mission is research into civil aviation, and part of that is data colletion on air safety. \_ But I'd think studing near collisions caused by human factors like pilots being drunk or staring at stewardess' chests shouldn't be a burden for NASA, which I think should focus on science and technology side of things. \_ Bush has cut funding for science and technology at NASA. Those are bad words. Instead, money is going to use proven technology to develop a Shuttle replacement to send us to LEO and the Moon. \_ So we should fund an entirely different Federal project just to study the human factos. Great. Where's the gravy train line start? \_ No, we should put the burden on FAA. \_ The FAA pushes paper, they don't do science. |

10/22 I want a perl regex that reduces 2 or more consecutive newlines to 2 newlines. perl -pe 's/\n\n(\n*)/\n\n/gms' doesn't work, and I don't understand why. Any ideas? \_ You're reading your input one line at a time. Try this: perl -0pe 's/\n\n+/\n\n/g' --mconst \_ Are they just \n's or are they \n\r's? |

10/22 # There's a problem with this function, someone please fix it? def dans: while True: spew_troll_on_motd() \_ Hey man, I've got to do something while I wait for svn. -dans \_ how about posting jokes and videos instead of rants against tom holub? \_ Wait for svn to do WHAT? I use svn and it is as instantaneous as cvs. In fact, isn't svn based on cvs? \_ svn can get slow if you've got a big project. However, it is *not* based on cvs. It is designed from the ground up to be a better replacement for cvs. -emarkp \_ svn used by many developers for a large project on a heavily loaded server can be painfully slow. -dans \_ just curious: what are you working on? \_ please correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the big problem with 'slow svn' is you imported some gigantic cvs suppository, and svn is having a hard time dealing with the cvs history. \_ yermom handles gigantic imports just fine \_ No, the svn repository I work with was always an svn repository. One issue is that we're upgrading to a new version with an incompatible database format so we need to replay years of history to get it into the new version. -dans |
