9/10 http://www.cato-unbound.org/2007/09/10/robin-hanson/cut-medicine-in-half More 'absurd' claims about medicine and health. -- ilyas \_ One take-away is that we should all be spending more money and time at/in gyms. \_ What a shock: the Cato Institute thinks the government should spend less on social services. I never would have expected that! \_ But, but, the Heritage Foundation agrees! Oh, wait.... \_ The author of the essay is not affiliated with Cato, he's a GMU economist. -- ilyas \_ The GMU economist who came up with the brilliant idea of using idea futures markets to set Middle East policy. \_ You set yourself up for the obvious "even such a patently absurd notion as idea futures will probably do better than what we have now when it comes to the Middle East." We can make another thread about idea futures, this one is about health and medicine. -- ilyas \_ Heh, you set up the obvious "idea futures will probably do better than what we have now." I think his point isn't to change the decision making process in our society overnight, but to encourage exploration of new ways of aggregating information for decision making in limited settings. Are you trying to paint him as a nut? He's not a nut, but he is interested in 'paradigm-shifting' ideas, and more generally in bias, which means he often writes on ideas that seem strange. -- ilyas \_ Yes, I remember when I suggested that Bush was lying about Saddam Hussein having WMD before the start of the war and was dismissed as being "too absurd to be true." Are you talking about things like that? \_ I worked in the health care system and these observations all ring try to me. We spend way too much money on extending the life of people who are half dead anyway and not enough on prevention. -ausman |

God damn that man is such a wanker. \- "I won the John Bates Clark Medal. You, sir, are a game show host." ... BEEN STEIN is not just a pud, but may actually be semi-insane. Did I fool you? \_ Dude, in that article he tries to play it both ways so bad it isn't even funny. \_ "Six years." \_ Why do you take it so seriously? It's obviously not a "here are my weighty predictions" article. It's just some dumb fluff piece. \_ Look, it's just a dumb fluff piece so I can take both positions. See, just a dumb fluff piece. Of course after everything goes down I can point to the parts that were right and forget all the fluffyness. If things go totally haywire and neither X nor Y happen I can just shrug and say it was a dumb fluff piece. This is exactly why I think The Daily Show shouldn't get a pass for being on Comedy Central. \_ Uh, when have people pointed to the Daily Show in a serious way? I don't see how anyone could point to this article here in a serious way either. \- Jon Stewart doesnt claim to be a lawyer && economist && journalist && philosopher, seek affiliation with think tanks which lobby to change public policy etc. BSTEIN allegedly was #1 in his class at yale law, so ostenisibly he at some point was a smart guy. but he says so many whack things, that why i think you need some theory ot explain his brain snapping or being disingenuous etc [like ann coulter clearly says some things so she becomes a media story-> free advertising]. |

9/11 Weird, it's 911 and no one has started the "where were you 6 years ago thing." I'll start: \_ My roommates yelled at me to turn the tv on. I called my friend from NYC and told him to wake up and turn on the tv. He said "I'm sleeping. Tape it for me." \_ I arrived at work and was told that the WTC was gone. \_ I logged onto Soda immediately to troll emarkp. Oh wait no I didn't. But that would have been funny! \_ I think trolling paolo was more in fashion then. \_ We should only do this on 5 year anniversaries. (I was at home, then I went to work... pretty much like any other day except for all the excitement. National disasters are really entertaining.) \_ I had stayed up all night working on a grant presentation for Oakland City Council. I got a half-hour's sleep, hit the shower, and then my wife came running in to tell me what happened. Needless to say, the City Council hearing was cancelled. --erikred \_ I was vacationing in Bali. I met another American girl on vacation in a bar there. We ended up back at my hotel room at night. I thought I was going to get laid. But we spent the whole night watching 9/11 coverage on the Asian edition of CNBC instead. Damn terrorists. \_ Did you make a pass at her anyway, the next day or something? \_ No. I thought it would be classeless. Plus, I wasn't really in the mood. \_ "If you don't have sex with me, it means the terrorists have won." \_ My wife and I were getting ready to go to work. Then my dad in Hong Kong called me, yelling at me to turn on the TV as if I did something wrong. \_ You're such a screwup they put it on tv! Turn on the tv, quick! |

9/11 Hi does anyone else run linux/freebsd on their Desktop? Do you encrypt your home directory? How does that play nice with hibernation/suspend? Do you have to enter in a secret key when you log in? Could you give a short summary of how this all works? thank you! \_ I'm a FreeBSD user. I do not encrypt my home directory as I don't keep anything important there. I do have GBDE partitions, and occasionally have soft links to files there from my home directory. Once attached, GBDE partition is "just there." Hibernation/suspend should not affect it. I don't hibernate/suspend anyway. I'd think that if you have a good password, and lock your X session (or just log out), you'd be safe. If the machine is rebooted, GBDE partition is gone. You need to re-attach with the password. |

9/11 remember when politburo got rid of the motd after 9/11 because someone's dumb girlfriend thought someone said mean things? those were the days. \_ Yes, and it was the right thing to do. \_ I remember when Berkeley stood up for Free Speech. \_ The CSUA != Berkeley != UC Berkeley != FSM. \_ The CSUA is not part of UC Berkeley? Could have fooled me... \_ Also, Berkeley would likely not exist at all if the University wasn't here. \_ You seem to misunderstand the meaning of equality. And, if you want to nitpick, the CSUA is an ASUC sponsored student group, and the ASUC is independent of UC Berkeley. \_ Yeah, it's always the right thing to do to make sure that the unethical CSUA President continues to get laid. That's way more important than the CSUA community. -tom \_ From my memory the things that were being said were close enough to racist hate speach (if not were racist hate speach) that had things escelated to the right people the csua could have had a serious disaster on it's hands. On the level of no more csua. For sure no more csua office. A few weeks timeout for everyone didn't hurt anyone. \_ Oh and the rest of the trash posted here the rest of the year wouldn't be a problem? Uh huh.... -!tom \_ Berkeley's hate speech provisions were struck down as being overly broad limits on freedom of speech. I don't think that the CSUA would have been in any kind of trouble whatsoever, even if people had complained, but I understand your concern. \_ That's horse crap; it's like saying that CalMail would be taken down because people sent hate mail through it. The very most that would happen is that someone would tell the CSUA to delete the comments. -tom \_ Can someone explain what sort of mean things were said? I was on motd-vacation at the time or something and never found out. \_ There was one troll who posted some anti-Arab, anti-Muslim stuff, raw stuff along the lines of nuke/kill them all etc. Those posts had contrary replies, of course (since when do trolls fail on the motd?). It's an unmoderated anonymous forum. I don't believe there was any real legal issue. In fact, treating it that way sort of implies that the CSUA really is responsible for what someone posts in here. \_ CSUA gets university money and valuble space. Guess what, clubs have been shut down for stuff like that pretty damn fast. If some sports team had a real old school cork board that started getting racist screeds on the level of "Kill all the sand-niggers" (it really was that bad people) how long do you think it would take before Cal clamped down HARD? Seriously. I think the eventual fallout was that the default login didn't see motd.public on login. See, a solution was found. \_ Could you give a relevant example of a club that was shut down? -tom \_ I don't know, what downclamping do you think would happen? Anyone could just remove the screeds. The motd wasn't really shut down anyway, people posted in some other file for a while. I have no problem with not showing motd.public on login. But it could always have been disabled. Nobody was forced to read it. If someone posted a racist screed on a lamppost in SF, and I got offended, can I sue SF? \_ Who said anything about lawsuits? -dans |

9/11 I think I have a nifty idea for a software project, but since I am not independently wealthy AND I don't feel like having it ripped off so that I wind up with nothing, I was wondering if the MOTD could advise me on how I could wisely go about getting funding for this project, and protect myself. If I should only stick with close friends and relatives, then I will do so. Thank you. \_ The most important thing is that TOTALLY COMPLETELY NOVEL and KICK ASS ideas that will make billions of dollars... are dime a dozen in Silicon Valley. Look at it from the VC perspective: "I'm a VC and every single day I get bombarded by 100 enthusiastic smart people from #1 schools who think they're the next Bill Gates or the next Google." If you accept this fact and understand why people don't want to pay attention to your GREAT IDEA, then you're ready for the next step. \_ Thanks for the reality check. \_ First advice is get some legal advice from a real lawyer. If you need venture capital, there are venture capital meetups that you can go to. There's one that's called STIRR (stirr.net) where they bring people together in a more social setting. But if you don't need a whole lot of capital, you can also just take out a business loan. That way, if your idea succeeds, you can still own all rights to it instead of giving the VC a share. \_ 2nd time I've heard this nugget. Thank you. \_ You should talk to some people who have been through the whole start-up thing before. Eventually, you will have to share your ideas to get funding (obviously) but you will need to do a bunch of things first. You can email me if you like, since I have worked at a bunch of startups, but never on the business side of things. -ausman \_ IMO, ausman's advice is good. The best suggestion I have is to get a working implementation as quickly as possible and be prepared to iterate quickly. Having a working prototype or later stage product significantly increases your ability to obtain funding, increases your valuation (i.e. you hand over less of your company for your funding), and offers some protection. Generally speaking, VC's don't sign NDA's. You're welcome to email me too, as I've worked at a bunch of startups (working for one now) and have worked on the business/funding side of things in the past. -dans |

9/11 http://www.tcsdaily.com/article.aspx?id=062706C Beliefs as trust cues. (This guy apparently is affiliated with Cato, although this doesn't appear to be a Cato-related essay.) -- ilyas \_ Good article. \_ Agreed, a good article. However, I found two of his references suspect: Lawrence Summers' remarks vis-a-vis diversity, while based loosely on good empiricism, drifted into speculation not necessarily supported by empirical observation; and Wade's comments on the objective assignment of race by way of genetic markers tied to continent of origin ignores the fact that races are overly broad categories that ignore immense genetic variation within the target population while reinforcing popular misconceptions of varying aptitudes and social tendencies among members of given races. Mind you, the trust cues I get from this piece ID Kling as a Conservative, but I gather that he thinks of himself as more of a rationalist. |
