7/23 Apparently we really *do* use only 10% of our brain:
http://www.news-medical.net/?id=27900
Given this, I wonder WTF we evolved such a huge brain.
\_ "...with a government job." I rest my case.
\_ Granted, the guy took an IQ hit, but even so he's way
smarter than the next smartest animal. How come we have
such large brains given this info? Seems like a waste.
\_ yeah, and why do we have four fingers and two ears?
\_ A brain is an extremely expensive object to
maintain. Selection pressure favors two eyes
and two ears (depth and direction perception).
Good question on the # of fingers. Anyway,
the point is that the cost of 4 fingers isn't
much more than the cost of three, but a brain
that is 5x larger than required for a given
intellect is hard to understand.
\_ the brain isn't 5x larger than required for a given
intellect. We also have two kidneys and two gonads.
Nature builds redundancy.
\_ The key section of the article, "Experts say it shows how amazing
the brain is in that it can deal with something which is not
considered to be compatible with life and they suggest that when
something happens very slowly over a period of time, different
parts of the brain assume functions that would normally be done by
the part that is pushed to the side."
\_ As an aside, it's not really clear that
we have 2 kidneys for "redundancy". Why not
two hearts/two brains/two spines? It might
just be "easier" to have certain organs
symmetric--i.e., the reason for 2 kidneys
may not be redundancy at all.
\_ It *seems* that you must be right--I do not
think an item as expensive as a brain would
be allowed to have a 5x redundancy factor by
selection pressure. However, this person is
pretty much functional with a very small brain.
It is hard to understand. |

7/23 Dear fellow puppy parents. If you have those non-shedding fluffy
hair type of pups, at what age are you suppose to shave your puppy
completely so that it'll grow fuller hair as an adult? Also, what
was your crate-training schedule like? Is it something like
sleep sleep sleep->wake->poo outside->play->eat->poo outside->
sleep sleep sleep->wake->poo outside->play->eat->poo outside->
repeat 8 times a day? I'm thinking of taking an entire month
off (plus maybe 1-2 more weeks) till he's maybe 4 months old.
\_ ^parents^owners
\_ "owners" -> "guardians" -> "parents"??? So now even "guardians"
are not politically correct anymore?
\_ DOG IS THE STANDARD TROLL!
\_ Shaving won't affect hair later in life.
\_ Crate training: the 'rule' is that a dog can spend no more than an
hour or two at a time in a crate per month of life. For our dogs,
one absolutely refused to go in the crate at all but was really
easy to train to knock to go outside around the corner to his spot.
The other one loves her crate but we had a very hard time getting
her to let us know when she needed to go out. The carpet was just
as good in her mind. What we did was hang some bells from the back
door handle, took her out a *lot*, like every 30-60 minutes all
day, every day, rang the bells when we opened the door and gave her
a treat when she came back in. At night, one of us would stay up
later and the other would get up early so she'd be crated as short
a time as possible. After a short time she got the idea and started
smacking the bells to go out all day to get her treat. Over time
we reduced the treat load and she stopped ringing for no reason and
now she's old enough and has the bathroom concept down. Repetition
is the key. One thing you *never* want to do is leave your dog in
the crate for so long they can't wait and mess their crate. Once a
dog has broken their crate training like that you are hosed. They
won't mess their crate from the natural instinct to not mess their
own bed area but if you leave them no choice they'll keep doing it.
I've seen puppies rolling in their own filth at puppy mill places
and pet stores. Never take one of those home. Oh yeah, most pups
have to go sometime in the first 20 minutes after a play session,
so be alert or just take them out if they've been romping around
the living room. Nature's Miracle for the errors. Look up the
Sirius method of pet training for an all positive reinforcement
scheme that works with most dogs.

\_ One problem is defining what "rich" means.
\_ That's easy, I'm pretty sure the standard everyone in the survey
was using was "richer than me."
\_ Easily done: Income > $1,000,000 per year.
\_ "But but but that is COMMUNISM!!! Time to lobby to make

\_ Unfortunately, politicians define "rich" as between $75K and
$200K / yr. depending on who is asking the question.

rich, since they're the only ones who can afford a house

7/23 I don't get it. Blockbuster is killing Netflix, yet Blockbuster's
selection is crap.
http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/070723/netflix_results.html?.v=2
\_ Last think I read, just a month or so ago, was that Blockbuster
was failing miserably.
\_ I used to be a Netflix customer about 7 or 8 years ago -
whenever it was that DVD was still pretty new and most video
stores didn't carry them. I didn't see the point in staying
with them. I paid a monthly fee whether I rented or not and the
service started degrading over time. You could have fewer
with them. I paid a monthly fee whether I rented or not and
the service started degrading over time. You could have fewer
movies out at a time, they had to be received before they would
ship new ones, and they got lost or stolen in the mail. I know
Blockbuster has now adopted a similar model, but I just go into the
video store when I want a movie. I find that cheaper and more
convenient. I liked the Netflix selection, but it's not really about
selection. One nice thing about Blockbuster's plan is that you
can return and checkout movies at the video store in addition
to using the mail.

\_ My guess is that the average American consumer doesn't care
about "selection," they are interested in having the latest
Hollywood release the day it comes out. Netflix is pretty
bad about that sort of thing, especially if you live in a
remote location. BB is much better for the average american
because they only stock the latest Hollywood POS.
Personally, I'll stick with Netflix b/c they have a better
selection of foreign, pbs, bbc, nat'l geo, gay, &c. than even
the Cupertino library. |

7/23 Anyone watched Wife Swap on ABC? Is it just me or it seems
like they made the liberal housewife seem overly evil (drinking
alcohol & swearing in front of kids) and the conservative
housewife too good to be true? I mean, I've never met a woman
who would actually stay home, *cook* amazing meal, clean house,
take care of kids (and preach religion), and be really nice to her
husband! It's just too good to be true. It makes me want to be
part of the religious movement even though I'm not religious.
\_ Who wouldn't want a cheerful slave^H^H^H^H^Hhelpmeet to tend
to him and his family?
\_ Yeah much better for everyone if the illegal nanny raises the
kids speaking Spanish while they're both out improving their
self-esteem and bank accounts climbing the corporate ladder
and making money so they can afford the best divorce lawyers
later. But don't worry about the kids, they'll be much happier
after their biological parents are divorced so they'll have
even more time to spend with the nanny/mom.
\_ Yay, one-dimensional caricatures duking it out as proxies for
complex social issues on both sides!
\_ Post a caricature, get a caricature back. Welcome to the
motd. Let us know when you have the motd quality sound
bite that properly analyses today's complex social issues.
\_ "on both sides" Welcome to the Reading is Fundamental.
I didn't post the previous caricature.
\_ Try again. Reading *is* fundamental. Please try it.
\_ There are plenty of good women out there. Your odds of meeting
them in a place like San Francisco are very low.
\_ The definition of good/bad is very subject. However, I will
1/2 agree with you that the odds of meeting a CONSERVATIVE
woman in SF is very low. Most of them are ultra liberal and
care more about saving the whale and saving whatever crap
over anything else. I'm not even going to into their bad
habits like alcohol, marijane, Burning Man, bad music,
party, not shaving legs and ride Critical Mass, etc etc.
I will on the other hand have to say that I'm very
impressed by the Indian women in San Jose/Sunnyvale. Many
of them were brought over by their husbands who work in
the tech industry and seem very nice people. Two of my
co-workers' wives also cook everyday, raise kids, take care
of their homes meticulously, and treat their husbands
like king. Obedient wives I've met: Punjabi and the ones
from different parts Southern India. Worst wives I've met:
Bengali. Bengalis are extremely well educated and pretty
much white inside, love to wear nice expensive Western
accoutrement, drive Mercedes, and divorce easily.
\_ congrats on being able to differentiate between punjabi
bengali southern india whatever. i don't know the difference,
and i don't care.
\_ Depends on what you are looking for. I would rather that my
wife be educated and have her own career, so we can pay for
a maid to do the housecleaning. Divorce rates are highest
amongst Conservative Christians, probably because they tend
to marry so young.
\_ Been there, done that. Fired the maid. Wife left her job.
We're much happier now. The idea that your wife is just
there as a maid and never seeing her because you're both
exhausted from work and never in a good mood is why divorce
rates are high. And who says your stay at home traditional
wife can't be educated? And who is raising your kids while
you're both out at work having a career? The nanny? Day
care?
\_ Kids are passe. The real problem is having any to
begin with.
\_ Uh yeah, the whole country should just stop having kids.
That is a great plan. Why did you bother posting?
\_ I wouldn't have any problem with no one anywhere
ever having any kids.
\_ Which makes you a freak and not a reasonable
participant in these sorts of discussions.
\_ I only work 40 hrs/wk and am not particularly exhausted
from my job. I am sure my wife would be crankier if she
stayed at home all day, since she finds work fulfilling.
Why is your wife the stay-at-home one and not you?
\_ Because I made 50% more than her at the time. I would
have been perfectly happy to stay home if it was the
other way around. Does that unruffle any ruffled up
political correctness feathers? I'm honestly glad you
and your wife find work fulfilling. Most people find
work stressful and unfulfilling. Having a job that
doesn't wear you down is important to happiness for
both of you.
\_ Glad you found something that works for you both.
And yes, the daughter is in daycare about 35 hours
a week, which she loves. We think she is happier
this way, but it is kind of hard to tell. We still
spend more time with her than they do. We think the
chance to get socialized is good for her.
\_ I don't see how a child can be happier in day
care instead of with her parents for all that
time. By age 5-6 kids are in kindergarten or
first grade where they get plenty of social time
and might actually start to learn something in
some areas. I'm curious what you base the
"we think she is happier this way" part on? How
old is she?
\_ She shows visible excitement and runs off
to play everytime I drop her off. She used
to cry when I dropped her off (the first week)
now she doesn't even look back and say
"bye." She is a toddler, so it is hard to
have a conversation with her. |
