7/13 "Under the president's reasoning, any while-collar defendant should
receive no jail time, regardless of the reprehensibility of the crime."
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, a Bush appointee, said before
sentencing attorney Troy Ellerman to prison.
        DAMN LIBERAL JUDGES!!!!!
        http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2007/07/13/BAGR7QVVIF1.DTL&type=printable
\_ I was confused when reading that in the paper today. I couldn't
figure out why the judge would bring up Scooter while sentencing
someone. I mean I can see why, but legally... it shouldn't
           matter.
\_ Eh, please read more carefully? The defense lawyer cited
the commutation in asking for a lighter sentence.
\_ Because Bush explicitly said that the sentance was too high.
That was his rational. Not that the crime wasn't exactly as
the prosecution claimed but that jail time was too much for
the crime. Therefore jail time should be too much for someone
else charged with the same crime, no?
\- i just want to point out this is bullshit ... kinda
like when MSFT wanted to pay a fine in donated software.
                 -------------------------------------------------------
White gave Ellerman until Sept. 13 to report to
prison. He did not impose a fine, saying it would be
a hardship for Ellerman's family, but ordered the
attorney to give talks at 10 California law schools
about "the importance of being a fair and honest
advocate" in the three-year period after his release.
                 -------------------------------------------------------
                 1. i dont want an ethics lecture from a criminal
                 2. he will probably put "lectured at X law school"
                    on his resume
                 3. this is hardly unpleasant work
                 4. he should have to do something involving a
a orange jumpsuit and used chewing gum.
\_ He still has to go to jail for 2 years doesn't he?

7/13 The Ultimate Unicycle:
        http://www.unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=808
\_ I have a larger version of this; a 700c ultimate wheel is easier
to ride than a 20". -tom
\_ Compared to a unicycle, how much harder is riding an ultimate
              wheel?
\_ Depends how you define "riding." To get comfortable on an
ultimate wheel takes a lot more practice than getting
comfortable on a unicycle. But getting 10 feet for the
first time might be as fast or faster on the ultimate wheel.
Although I've never seen anyone try to learn UW who wasn't
already a unicyclist, so I don't know what it would be like
                 for a non-unicyclist. -tom
\_ Doesn't seem like you'd get much mechanical advantage
                    from the ultimate wheel.
\_ It's enormously strenuous to ride one. -tom

7/13 I'm thinking about getting a Soekris 4501 to replace my the P2-400
that is currently acting as my home firewall. Has anyone used a
Soekris system for this purpose? If so, how well does it work? Also,
if there are any alternatives (similar power/form factor), I would
appreciate links to those as well. tia.
\_ John got me to use a WRAP box similar to Soekris. I use this one:
           http://www.pcengines.ch/wrap1e203.htm
and run m0n0wall on it. It works very well for its purpose. You
should consider what you want out of a firewall. If all you want
is just a simple packet filter, you can probably get away with
buying one of the Linksys WRT54 clones for under $100 and flashing
the firmware with what you want. The newer models are fast enough
to handle some VPN tunnels as well. You can just disable the wifi
and use just the wired ports. Sure, you can do packet filtering
firewall with these without flashing the firmware, but the default
firmwares generally only restrict incoming packets and not outgoing.
\_ Well, I've been using OpenBSD for years and I don't really want
to switch to something like a WRT54 b/c I don't really trust it
(or Linux). I was basically looking for something I could run
OpenBSD on that didn't use a lot of power.
\_ One thing to keep in mind if you are putting in your own
installation on these boxes is the compact flash write
count. So you should consider what type of write access
you'll be making in your setup. I do not know if
the CF microdrives would be any better in that respect.
I must admit, that once I learned to use PF (on FreeBSD),
netfilter/ipnat annoys me more than they used to.
\_ Yeah, I read about how to manage CF write count by
mostly using memory fs for any rw partition. That
will be fine for what I'm doing. I hardly every
                    change the system after install.

7/12 In China, the military comes first.
        http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070713/ap_on_bi_ge/china_tainted_products
"BEIJING - China needs to better integrate its fractured regulatory
system to improve its food safety record, a top health official said
Friday, as the military warned that unsafe food could undermine its
        ability to fight."
"Wang's comments came on the same day an official newspaper reported
that the People's Liberation Army -- the world's largest military --
has ordered improved safety checks and will buy food only from
suppliers who pass local government hygiene and safety tests."
\_ This is so unsuprising as to be laughable... if only it weren't so
           unfunny.
\_ I don't understand what you find wrong with this. Any collective
organization has better bargaining power than an individual, and
the Army has a perfect right to demand safe food for it's soldiers.
           Is there something I'm missing?
\_ The Chinese civilian population is much bigger than its military
              population.
\_ and you are saying in USA, military doesn't come first?
\_ If you've ever eaten C rations or MREs, you wouldn't have to
              ask.

Gentlemen do not discuss money or sex: .
        \_ Defined how?
\_ I think it's current value of all your assets. This includes
current market value of your house minus remaining principle in
your mortgage, current dollar amount in your 401(k), current
market value of your stocks, money in your saving account, plus
current market value of your car, TV, stereo, porn magazine
collection, etc. The fact that you'll have to pay tax if you
sell your house, cash out your 401(k), etc. is irrelevant.
