6/28 You know what I hate most about S Cal? Cal Worthington's annoying commercials. Long Beach cow boys buying trucks. Fuck cowboys, fuck trucks, fuck Cal Worthington's commercials. \_ and his dog Spot It isn't Spot's fault. He's just a rental. _/ \_ that guy must be dead by now. he had a car lot in Sacramento too. My dad says cal would sell sailors cars in long beach 50 years ago. \_ I was confused for a bit as I grew up in Central Valley watching Cal Worthington commercials. Now I at least know I'm not totally crazy. \_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Worthington He's still alive, apparently he's 86 years old. \_ Is Larry H. Parker still doing ads? |

6/27 People vote with emotions and not brains. Fear-mongering works better than reasoning-- Why Democrats are destined to lose: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19461257/site/newsweek/page/0 \_ Because Democrats are the party of logic? Er, ok. And here I thought they did the same fear mongering and heart string pulling as the other party. Or maybe you meant that some third party candidate is going to win? \_ ...are you really going to tell me that you think the Dems have fear-mongered anywhere near the level of Bush and the current GOP, the party that made the "us or suitcase nukes in your city" part of their 2004 campaign? \_ They are no more 'pro-logic' than the other party, yes. D=R. \_ I'm certainly not exonerating them for their petty foibles, but comparing them to the current Admin and the GOP under DeLay and Gingrich is utterly laughable. Let's try to preserve a modicum of scale. \_ It's on the same scale, just open your eyes and see that just because you agree with something doesn't mean they got there by logic. Both parties do it equally and treat all the voters like a commodity. \_ I agree with you that they are neither of them logical. We can also agree that firecrackers and thermonuclear devices are explosive, but you wouldn't suggest that the damage done by the first is the same as that done by the latter, would you? \_ OUR LIZARDS ARE BETTER, DAMN IT! -- ilyas \_ You're begging the question. It isn't firecrackers vs. nukes. The two parties are the same. That is exactly the point here. |

6/28 First toxic pet food, then toxic fish, juice with unsafe color additives, Thomas toy trains with lead paint, toxic toothpastes, and now pigs force-fed wastewater and tainted snacks and seafood. What's wrong with Chinese manufacturers these few months? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070628/ap_on_re_us/china_tainted_food \_ It's what happens when you don't believe in government. We used to, y'know, inspect these sorts of things. \_ What? \_ We used to inspect 100% of all imports? \_ Did I say that? Are you suggesting that these are one-off issues? A handful of bad apples from otherwise reputable shops, and they just slipped through our totally respectable and responsible screens? \_ We do still do inspections you know. Most of the contamination cases in China are for the domestic market. Also, the ones they ship out are usually picked because they can fool the simple tests. I don't really think we should've given China such a good trading status, but... \_ So the chinese thinks it's cool to poison chinese? i guess they can breed replacements easily. \_ The Chinese think it's fine to do just about anything as long as you don't get caught. Cf. the current uproar about brick-factory slavery. \- at least China had the "decency" to sentence the SFDA head to death. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zheng_Xiaoyu How about we execute Brownie? W should be willing to pull the switch. \_ Praising the broken clock for being right twice a day does not make it fixed. \_ Not these few months, but always. It is cheaper to do things wrong. \_ "It can be said that the quality of China's exports all are guaranteed," Wang [said.] Oh really? The PRC's gonna pay? \_ Seafood loaded down with lead continues to be imported to South Korean from China. I first heard about it 5 years ago, and it appears to still be happening occasionally. |

6/28 VMware question: The free downloads area list vmware player and vmware converter. Isn't that enough to do everything? Convert an existing windows box into a .vm image and use the free player to run it. What else do I need? What do the other products like VMware workstation give me? Their products page should have a big table listing all the major features and bullets showing which product has what. I can't find that. It's a confusing products page. Thanks. \_ Workstation has some nice features like being able to save multiple snapshots and such which is good for developers. The latest version of Workstation also has better hardware support and some other goodies. There's also VMWare Server, which is a free product that can let you create VMs as well. VMWare Server interface is limited to one snapshot per VM(though internally, it does keep previous snapshots in a linear fashion. Workstation may offer snapshotting in non-linear states - I've never used the Workstation product when snapshots were in place.) |

6/28 my girlfriend informs me she doesn't really feel any inner desire anymore to have sex. you know how some girls have a drawer they keep their sex toys in? my girlfriend has a fucking mail crate. what should i do.? \_ Counseling, medication, dump her. Whatever order you like. Unless of course, you just suck in bed.. Then there's little \_ ha ha that can be done. \_ is there meds with this stuff? Do people really wake up and become Anti Paladin Der Furious motd boob guy? \_ is the mention of the sex toys to illustrate how much she once loved sex? Or is this a new development? She's turning to the toys as a substitute? Or maybe she is realizing she's gay now? The possibilities are endless! It doesn't sound like your relationship is very healthy- you need to put some serious work into saving it, or just end it. I recommend picking one or the other very very soon, like today. --brain \_ Either you're a bad lover or she's cheating on you. \_ Don't listen to this person above. They are clueless. \_ Not much you can do, dude. Now you know what marriage is like. \_ If you love her enough to want to stick it out, get used to self- service and give it time. Depending on what else is going on in her life (family, work, etc.), this may just be a phase. If sex is more important than she is, consider yourself lucky you found out before you got married, and move on. \_ Give it time? No, give it work. This takes communication and probably therapy (if it's worth saving). A change in sexual dynamics doesn't come from nowhere. And going from a contented sex life to a sexless relationship isn't the same as, say, wanting to change careers. \_ You're right, a change in sexual dynamics doesn't come from nowhere. It sometimes comes from external pressures that you have no hope of actually changing or affecting, in which case communication and support is a good idea, but the overall prescription is patience. In other words, it's not necessarily about you. \_ It kind of depends on how long you have been going out together, what else is working and not working for you in the relationship, and how important sex is to you. If everything else is fine and you have been going out for a while, it is probably worth trying to figure out what is going on. It is also possible that this is just her way of saying she wants to break up, especially if you have only been going out for a few months. |

6/28 what? We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative. | We believe that you are in Canada (your IP address appears to be 129.97.152.65). If you believe we have made a mistake, we apologize and ask that you please contact us at pandora-support@pandora.com \_ Yes, unfortunately outside the US there is no statuatory licensing system for Internet Radio. There was hope that we could establish some deals to allow international use, but so far it hasn't happened. The whole CRB controversy ironically made people in some countries more aware of what was going on, and we had to shut off access. Sorry about that, it sucks! :( If you were inside the US when you got this message, contact support and they may be able to whitelist your IP. --lye |

6/28 People say good things about servlets-- shared connection pool, shared resources, not having to fork new proc, not having to interpret, etc. However, the chart below says otherwise. Is this consistent with what you guys have experienced? It appears that Servlet is the big loser here: http://www.dmst.aueb.gr/dds/pubs/conf/2002-SANE-DynCont/html/dyncont.html \_ Well, "servlets" is a pretty big category. Tomcat is pretty sucky yes (it's 100% java, what do you expect?) but there are other servlet engines out there. Also from looking that their methedology, it doesn't look like they increased the number of concurrent worker threads for tomcat. My memory is tomcat is set to use some piddling number of threads in the default configuration, which would totally make those results make sense. \_ Yeah, tomcat is the reference implementation and is not taken seriously by businesses that have clue. \_ What do businesses that have a clue use? Jetty seems even worse than tomcat. Resin has worked well for me in the past. How about you? \_ Resin works well and is inexpensive. \_ This paper is from 2002. 6/28 Q: What are folks using these days for anti-spam measures? I'm looking for something that integrates with my MTA (postfix) or my delivery agent (sieve). Currently I'm using a crufty version of spamassassin wired into postfix via amavisd-new. It's decent, but I don't want to be bothered with manually upgrading spamassassin or updating rulesets on a regular basis. Anyone have any experience with DSPAM or Spamassassin plus some kind of automated rules updater? Are there any new open-source anti-spam tools ftw? -dans \_ I just let Thunderbird do the job. \_ I'm doing almost exactly what you're doing, plus I scan the mail log in real time and permanently firewall block any IP that is reported as having a high spam score and doesn't have a reverse IP. I've got about 8000 IPs blocked and get very little spam these days. YMMV. |
