                 America -- low prices and poor emissions standards make them
                 pretty attractive for buyers who can't afford a big western
                 prestige brand.  -John
           \_ Interestingly enough, in China Buick is considered a really hot,
              luxurious brand and a status symbol similar to a BMW or Merc in
              the States.  GM is doing much better in China than in the States,
              and I expect them to eventually become a mostly foreign company.

                 Maybe it's because Buick and Cadillac used to be luxurious
                 brands in the US, which are then reflected in China after a
                 time lag.  Or maybe it's just pure marketing.

                 find them double-parked on two-lane streets in front of
                 pachinko parlors.
                 \_ Jeeps were the 4x4 king in Japan.  When I told my
                    counterparts in Japan that I drive a Jeep Cherokee back
                    home, they thought "Wow!", while the reason I bought a
                    Cherokee was that I couldn't afford a Nissan Pathfinder or
