1/7 Check out the new and improved Yahoo Maps!
\_ It still doesn't allow users to move diagonally using arrow keys.
           \_ Minor and easily fixeable.
\_ Minor enough for me to stick with Google Maps.
\_ But it's got traffic data. I'm switching back to Yahoo.
\_ I like the old-style Yahoo Maps better. When I need
                       real-time traffic info, I use http://www.511.org

1/7 Looking to get an external HD for my mom (not yermom). Fry's has an
ACOMDATA 250GB USB 2.0 for $70 after rebate, but I see only review on
teh Intarweb (and it's suspiciously glowing). Any of you fine sodans
have experience with this product or its ilk? TIA. --erikred
\_ Seagate has 5 year warranty, I think. However their reliability
has gone down the drain in the past few years. I have a WD250
and it's pretty nice. Make sure to get one with FANS. Passive
cooling just isn't cool enough and heats up the drives and makes
them break down fast. I've had 2 bad drives already due to heat.
\_ Don't have an answer but do you think I should shave my hairy chest?
\_ In the spirit of the season, I'll humor you by pointing out that
my father has an amazingly hairy chest and my mom still loves
him. It varies from person to person. --erikred
\_ AMAZING. How long have they been married?
                 \_ 40 years. --erikred
\_ Note to self: Step 1) Don't shave 3) Attract women
\_ Do you like other bears?
\_ I have an ACOMDATA one. I like the fact that it has both FW and
USB. I personally would not use *any* external drive for reliable
backup. Majority of external drives have shorter warranty(1yr or
even shorter) and many seem to die early. I have a sneaking
suspicion that many no-name company may be using refurbished drives.
But I have seen numerous namebrands(like Seagate, Maxtor) that die
within a year. Use it as extra storage and not as the only storage
for important files. I have not noticed my ACOMDATA one heat up
           with extended use.

1/7 Hairy chest, shave or not? What attracts more women?
\_ Doesn't your question presuppose that you're doing all of your
attracting or repelling with your shirt off? How much time do you
have your shirt off anyway? If I walked around town with no shirt
right now, my last hope would be to meet a hot corroner, because
I'd get hypothermia and die before I could meet anyone else.

1/14 Called the csua office on Friday and was told that the machine is fixed
and ready to go, but UC won't allow it back on the network because it's
been rootkitted too many times. "someone who cares," you're doing more
harm than good. If you want to help, go through the politburo; cowboy
rootkits are not the way to go. --erikred
\_ "I take matters into my own hands. That's the American spirit."
-libural faking to be a cowboy conservative
\_ What you guys SHOULD really have done is run soda inside the VM
so that it's much easier to contain and to duplicate. You can run
multiple VMs on one machine. They even have educational discounts.
\_ Uh, does that mean it will never be back up? Can I have my fucking
           files back from my account?
\_ As far as I know erik you either have wrong or deprecated
information. The machine is still in the process of being fixed and
darch (the vp) has given an eta of "up on wednesday." While I think
the dept. is growing increasingly worried that we seem to get rooted
a bunch, I haven't heard anything substantial as to our "not being
allowed to bring it back online." And I was AT the office yesterday
and at the ensuing first politburo meeting. -mrauser
\_ ...? Your being there certainly trumps my phone call. I'll make
sure to get the name of the undergrad next time I call. And a
Wednesday eta sounds great. Thank you for the update. --erikred

1/14 Guys, I am a bit nervous. I think we are going to attack Iran next...
Well, in a way, we've already did. Last time I checked, embassy is
considered as sovereign territory of a nation. As we have raided the
Iranian embassy in Iraq, we are in effect attack Iran territory.
        http://www.payvand.com/news/07/jan/1131.html
Under normal circumstances, this would considered as an act of war.
On top of this, we are moving a carrier strike group to Persian Golf.
        http://csua.org/u/hvx
I am no military expert, but my knowledge tells me that carrier strike
group is not the best tool to fight insurgency in Iraq.
\_ That wasn't an embassy. Although if it was an embassy that
           would just be karmic anyway.
\_ I just think Bush's secret plan B is to escalate the war with
              Iran.
        \_ Bring it on!
\_ Hey, you mean like we were supposed to have a military draft in
           2006?
\_ if we were doing things right, we supposed to have a draft in
2003, blanked Iraq with one million draftees, commit entire nation
into this Iraqii mess. Then again, may be you still think the
war is going well. I am still waiting to see that beacon of
              democracy in the middle east.

beacon of democracy in the middle east.
\_ There have been numerous connections between the Iraq insurgency and
Syria & Iran (weapons, personnel, etc.). Stopping Iran from
supplying weapons could very well help fighting the insurgents.
\_ This is true. However, invading/waging war on Iran with the
forces currently available to us is not likely to produce the
result of "stopping Iran from supplying weapons" in the long run,
unless we swallowed our pride and asked for help from Syria in
pacifying Iraq. And hell, if we're going to go that route, why
not just negotiate with Iran in the first place?

of running the government of any president I knew. He was just a poor

         manage."

Pentagon wants 92,000 more. "Failure is not an option."
\_ Where are they gonna got 92,000 more when recruitment is down?
\_ hmm, I recall that we have roughly 20,000 casualties (3000 dead, rest
of them wounded). If anything, this "surge" is nothing but
           replenishment for the casualties, no?
\_ for once, I actually *AGREE* with Bush that we need a "surge."
however, I really think we should use this "surge" in Afghanistan
instead of Iraq. These 20k soldiers would probably made a big
           differences in Afghanistan.

1/7 I don't understand Oprah's new luxury school for underprivileged
girls. She spent $40 mil for 73 girls. Why couldn't she cut
lavish items to allow more girls to attend?
\_ Why do you care how other people spend their money?
\_ Her goal: To help underprivileged girls.
Execution: could be done in a way that'll maximize her goal.
\_ Her goal is to help girls they way she wants to.
\_ Bitch! While 73 girls in Africa are surfing the internet
73,000,000 people around them are starving to death.
\_ Still means she's done more for Africa than I (and
                       almost certainly you) have.
\_ Her gold: to get onto news headlines.
